Richard Bland College’s new residence halls provide significant cost savings to college freshman and sophomores
Next August, Richard Bland College (RBC) of The College of William and Mary, Virginia’s only junior college, will be transformed from a strictly commuter school to the only residential two-year institution in the Commonwealth. This transformation has begun with the construction of two new residence halls to accommodate 250 co-eds from all across the state of Virginia and beyond. This addition of a residential component means that RBC can now offer its exceptional curriculum and guaranteed transfer agreements to every qualified high school graduate in Virginia, whether they choose to live on campus or commute. Today’s P-I covers progress on the following three projects at Richard Bland: 1) a $27m residence hall complex (phase I set to open in Jul 08), 2) a 500,000 gallon water tower, and 3) an expanded/remodeled library (set to open in Nov 07).

VSU, Richard Bland among 28 shelters for hurricane evacuees
Today’s RTD covers how the greater Richmond area will help in the event of a category 3 or higher hurricane causing evacuations from Norfolk, Hampton Roads, etc. The shelters are designed to accommodate 50,000 people, and there are plans for evacuating upto 12,000 persons without transportation. Note that these 28 shelters, “all at state colleges, universities and institutions,” are for evacuees; local residents would go to shelters operated by their local governments.
