“Signage” — among the new pics in the Petersburg Flickr pool
June 17, 2008
Have you checked the Petersburg Flickr pics lately?
The most recent images/discussion include pictures from last week’s Friday for the Arts (e.g., here). There are also a number of great shots taken from what may have been the Battle of Old Men and Young Boys event or the Memorial Day event (e.g., here)?

Wassit?
Who can identify where each of the Wassits below are located? (They are all located in publicly visible spaces.) For purposes of discussion, I’ve numbered/named each image below.

In celebration of warm weather: it’s time for another “wassit?”

A *bunch* of photos have been added to the Petersburg Flickr pool
It seems many of the new pics are vintage 2006/2007. There’s a great series on Seward Luggage, plus signs and facades from around town. Check them out, feel free to add comments to them, and look for the ones that have ‘notes’ visible by hovering your mouse over them. (For the buildings that have changed significantly, it would be fun to post some before/after’s to Flickr.)

April 1865 panorama of Petersburg - UPDATED

[UPDATE: For a larger image with greater detail, click here. And if you hover over the larger image, you should be able to zoom a bit by left-clicking, to see even further detail.] [Moderator's note: I removed the link to the large-format image at the copyright holder's request.]
In April 1865 a Brady photographer, standing on Archers Hill, exposed four images of Petersburg, looking south across the river. Perhaps the photographer originally intended to create a panorama from all four images, but it was not done until 2002, 137 years later, when Michael Vaughan stitched the images together in a large, high-resolution print. In this print, one can make out details such as a horse grazing across a footpath, wash hanging on clothes lines and fluttering in the breeze, and a couple of people on the banks of the Appomattox. One can also see the architecture of mid-19th century Petersburg in glorious detail. Read more >

Ron Moring offers a tribute to J.T. Morriss
From Ron Moring: I’ve just selected a few of my favorite photographs taken on May 6, 2006 during the Blandford Church / Cemetery event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the J.T. Morriss Funeral Home business. With the passing of Mr. Morriss this past Friday, we in this city, and beyond, have lost a dedicated and compassionate native son. I have lost a lifelong friend and this is my small tribute to his Morriss family legacy, past, present and future.

Needs love, and maybe a front wall wouldn’t hurt?
While many historic structures in town could benefit from some TLC, the one at 423 S. Sycamore St. strikes me as especially sad:

Accepting photos for ‘how well do you know Petersburg’ quiz
The folks at West of the Boulevard News recently posted a photographic pop quiz featuring interesting details from around their stomping ground. ‘Tis a fantastic idea, so I’m stealing it. But since I myself have much to learn about Petersburg, I’m calling on you folks to email me photos with location identifiers. I’ll be accepting photos through Sept 20, when I plan on posting the quiz. Get out there and take some photos!
