Updated details re: Convocation at Petersburg High Shool
Attention all Petersburg City Public Schools employees, media and interested community members: The Petersburg City Public Schools 2008 Convocation will take place at 8am Tuesday, August 26, at Petersburg High School. This is a change from the date originally announced. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Crystal Kuykendall, who is president of Kreative and Innovative Resources for Kids, Inc., former executive director of the National Alliance of Black School Educators and author of several books, including “From Rage to Hope: Strategies for Reclaiming Black and Hispanic Students.” Read more >

Jessica White, a Petersburg High School (PHS) junior, has been chosen as PHS’ 2008 recipient of the West Point Leadership Award. The award presentation will take place Thursday, June 5 at 11:30 am at Petersburg High School. Read more >

UPDATED: VJMS to become VJJH; PHS graduation moved outside
For increased clarity, the whole message has been updated: The Board of Education of the Petersburg City Public Schools voted on Wednesday, May 7 to have Vernon Johns Middle School become Vernon Johns Junior High School. This fall, the school will have students in eighth and ninth grades, rather than the current setup of sixth through eighth grades.

Proactive safety measures worked out at PHS
From PPS’ Cliff Davis: Progress in the Petersburg City Public Schools to achieve the goal of a “World Class School Division” takes many forms: higher academic achievement, greater efficiency, and a safe and secure school environment. Following last Friday’s disturbance at Petersburg High School, district administrators have teamed up with the Petersburg Bureau of Police and Petersburg City Public Schools security staff to ensure that the school is as safe a learning environment as it can possibly be. PPS to hold community meeting *tomorrow* (Sunday)

Cameron Foundation contributes $60K to “Timely Tutoring”
Prior posts (here and here) note that “SES” will make free tutoring available to some of Petersburg’s Title I schools (i.e., schools that receive federal funds under Title I of No Child Left Behind). Today’s P-I notes that “Timely Tutoring” will offer additional tutoring assistance, to students of Petersburg High School (not a Title I school), Walnut Hill (a Title I school, but not eligible for SES because it is accredited), and JEB Stuart Middle School (in addition to SES, as JEB Stuart is at risk of being identified for improvement for a 5th year).
