HPF Announces New Officers and Trustees, Presents Annual Awards

The Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc. announced its new officers and trustees to the board at its annual meeting on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at the Pathways building on West Washington Street. Officers for the 2008-2009 fiscal year are: Larry Tucker, President; Guy Becker, III, First Vice President; Patty Pritchett, Second Vice President; Ann Morriss, Secretary; and LTC Garland Tompkins, Treasurer.

Presentation on importance of Petersburg railroads during Civil War

Chris Calkins, National Park Service veteran and renowned Civil War author, will give a talk on May 1 at 7pm on the development and importance of the railroad in Petersburg before and during the Civil War. Maps will be provided.

Walking tour, Historic architecture of Petersburg

Willie Graham, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Curator of Architecture, will lead a free walking tour through Old Towne Petersburg’s historic architecture explaining how the popular frame and brick technology changed and developed over the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The tour is sponsored by the Historic Petersburg Foundation (HPF) and will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 12.

Meeting on proposed demolition

From the folks at Historic Petersburg Foundation: HPF’s History Committee Chairman, Bob Kennedy recently learned that Ft. Lee plans to demolish the Davis House to make room for another unit coming to post. As you may know, the Davis House is the only extant structure from WWI Camp Lee, and was built from 1915-1917.

5th annual Ball in the ‘burg sets record

Larry C. Tucker, chairman of the Historic Petersburg Foundation’s (HPF’s) fifth annual Ball in the ‘Burg, was pleased to announce that this year’s ball, held at the Petersburg Regional Art Center in Old Towne Petersburg on February 23, was the foundation’s most successful Ball in the ‘Burg to date, as well as the 41-year-old organization’s biggest fund raiser of the year. The sell-out event featured the theme of “Paint the Town! Where Art Comes to Life.” More than 230 guests attended in formal attire or in costumes reflecting favorite works of art or artists.

A Walk with Heros - Stories from and about 9/11 “First Responders”

The Historic Petersburg Foundation and the City of Petersburg proudly present nationally recognized artist and humanitarian, Henry Kidd, at Union Train Station, Thursday March 6, 7pm. Mr. Kidd’s artistic talents cover two icons of America in Tragedy - The War Between the States and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. His presentation captures the emotion and tells the stories of the “First Responders” at the 9/11 site who risked their lives to save others. You will hear what few have from the context of his role in capturing the tragic history that unfolded on that fateful day.

I’m talking about the 5th Annual Ball in the ‘Burg (fundraiser for Historic Petersburg Foundation) folks. The details: Sat., Feb. 23 from 6:30pm to 12:00am at Petersburg Regional Art Center. The theme this year is “Paint the Town…Where Art Comes To Life” — come in black tie or as a figure from your favorite painting, a work of art, an artist, …. The evening’s events include: cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, dinner, dancing, and a costume competition. Tickets are $95 per person. HPF’s Home Tour raises funds for Appomattox Regional Governor’s School

Tuesday, Dec. 18, Ann Morriss and Patty Pritchett, co chairs of the Historic Petersburg Foundation’s 30th Annual Historic Homes Tour, presented a check to the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS) in the amount of $1,820. The donation represented HPF’s gratitude to ARGS for its contribution to the success of this year’s tour.
