Hoops! Basketball tournament August 9

The Hoops! Basketball Tournament, sponsored by SAVY, Petersburg Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition and the Petersburg City Public Schools, will be August 9, 10am to 4pm. The tournament is open to ages 12-19, males and females. Pre-registration and Petersburg residency required. Tracy Williams, formerly of the Harlem Globetrotters, will be present. Attention all Petersburg City Public Schools employees, media and interested community members: The Petersburg City Public Schools 2008 Convocation will take place at 8am Tuesday, August 26, at Petersburg High School. This is a change from the date originally announced. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Crystal Kuykendall, who is president of Kreative and Innovative Resources for Kids, Inc., former executive director of the National Alliance of Black School Educators and author of several books, including “From Rage to Hope: Strategies for Reclaiming Black and Hispanic Students.”

Attendance at the Convocation is required for all PCPS employees and we look forward to seeing you there.

I recently picked up a copy of “The Last Lecture” by virtual reality pioneer Randy Pausch at Minerva Books. Randy, diagnosed with terminal cancer, famously presented a “Last Lecture” at Carnegie Mellon University as a way to provide his young children insights he hoped would guide them in their lives. Noodling on the ‘net, I’ve learned that Randy has been named among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2008 — watch his “Last Lecture“, and related video, to see why.

More noodling on the ‘net led me to another great speech, this one by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos to recent business school grads at Carnegie Mellon: “Boldly fail where none have failed before” (when you get to the page, select the ‘launch video’ button). Head’s up: it takes Bezos about 5 mins. to catch his stride, but be patient as the segment is quite worthwhile.

Saint Joseph School will host an Open House on August 3, 1pm to 3pm, for families interested in enrolling their children at the school.

Saint Joseph School offers an affordable strong educational program with Christian Values in a supportive family environment in Old Town Petersburg. The school accepts students from PK3 through 8th grade and offers small classes, sports, band, student council, and before and after care. The school is accredited by SACS and VCEA.

Intercultural Festival, July 26 & 27

The Phoenix Project (www.phoenixproject.org) is proud to partner with Petersburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Cassandra Stroud-Burns for the 5th Annual Petersburg Intercultural Festival. This year’s festival is planned for Saturday, July 26 (10am - 5pm) and Sunday, July 27 (Noon - 5pm), at Poplar Lawn Park in Petersburg. There will be a wide array of musical performers and activities for kids of all ages. It promises to be a great event. For more information about the event, click here.
