Summer school commencement details
The Petersburg High School (PHS) Summer School Commencement Exercises will be held Thursday, July 31 at 9 a.m. in the PHS Auditorium. This ceremony is open to the general public.

Schools to hold work session July 16
The Petersburg City Public Schools will hold a worksession Wednesday, July 16 at 6 p.m. The agenda will be available Tuesday afternoon at the Petersburg Public Libraries. Major items for discussion will include Policy Revisions to Section G (Personnel), an MOU update, and updates to the Secondary Reconfiguration Timeline as well as regarding the progress of construction in the district.

Summer Challenges - Region’s gifted students demonstrate new skills tomorrow
Summer in Petersburg brings a special tradition – one that has often received applicants from as far away as Amelia and Charles City counties. That tradition is the three-day Summer Challenges program for Gifted and Talented Students, sponsored by the Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) and hosted at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS). Teacher of the Year
The Petersburg City Public Schools announces its district-level winner for the 2008 Mary V. Bicouvaris Teacher of the Year award, Ms. Hallie Powers, who teaches English at Petersburg High School. Ms. Powers will now compete for the honor of Regional Teacher of the Year. The winner of that competition will compete for statewide and possibly national honors. Read more >

Vernon Johns Middle School student wins essay contest
Aaron Cudjoe, a student at Vernon Johns Middle School in Petersburg, was honored at the Petersburg City Public Schools Board Meeting earlier this year. Aaron was one of 36 students, and the only one from the Tri-Cities, to win in the James River Chapter division of the 2008 Virginia Parent Teacher Association (PTA)’s annual Citizenship Essay Contest. This year’s theme was: Education, the Foundation of Freedom. “It’s important for students to get their ideas and their talents out there, for people to see the things that they can do,” said John Hart, president of the Petersburg Citywide PTA.

Kiwanis honored by Petersburg Schools for reviving Terrific Kids program
Five men were honored on June 18, at the Board meeting of the Petersburg City Public Schools, by R.E. Lee Elementary School Principal Barbara Patterson. These members of the Petersburg Kiwanis Club provided Lee students with supplies and other educational tools during May and June of the 2007-2008 school year. Their goal was to revive the long-standing Kiwanis “Terrific Kids Program” in Petersburg. Read more >

Petersburg middle schools take up BDPA challenge for first time
The Richmond Chapter of Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) presented the Middle School Computer Terminology Quiz Bowl on May 24, at the Times Dispatch Building in Mechanicsville. Students from Vernon Johns and Peabody middle schools in Petersburg were excited to represent Petersburg City Public Schools in this event for the first time. Teams had to answer questions about Computer Science and Technology, in a Jeopardy game show-style competition, testing their quick recall of very detailed, technical information. Read more >

VJMS students take home a first place honor
Students from Vernon Johns Middle School (VJMS) in Petersburg recently won first place in Robot Design in the Virginia/DC First LEGO League Regional Qualifying Tournament, which came about through their participation in the Digital Inspiration for Interactive Video Game Design and Programming Project sponsored by Longwood University. Longwood, in collaboration with Virginia State University, sponsored the competition. Read more >

Petersburg students are learning to write Chinese

The second grade students in teacher Nancy Grosvenor’s class at A.P. Hill Elementary School in Petersburg have been learning this semester how to write simple phrases and words in Chinese – the language of more than a billion people.

Agenda, tonight’s hearing on Section J of the School’s policy manual
Click here to read the agenda for tonight’s previously advertised meeting of the Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools. This hearing, to begin at 6 p.m. in the School Board Office, concerns Section J of the Petersburg School Board Policy Manual. Section J concerns student issues and the items up for revision include but are not limited to: exclusions and exemptions from school attendance; student dress and grooming; student conduct on school buses; and student suspension or expulsion. This is a public hearing and speakers will be able to discuss anything that pertains to the subject matter of the meeting.

School board to hold closed session May 12
The Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools will hold a call meeting on Monday, May 12 from 6 to 7 p.m., in the Board Room of the Petersburg School Board Office, 255 E. South Blvd. The meeting will be a closed session, to complete the annual evaluation of the Superintendent of Schools.

UPDATED: VJMS to become VJJH; PHS graduation moved outside
For increased clarity, the whole message has been updated: The Board of Education of the Petersburg City Public Schools voted on Wednesday, May 7 to have Vernon Johns Middle School become Vernon Johns Junior High School. This fall, the school will have students in eighth and ninth grades, rather than the current setup of sixth through eighth grades.

Earth science SOL remediation classes to be offered
Petersburg High School (PHS) is offering “Saturday School” for Earth Science SOL Remediation, on April 19 and 26, as well as on May 3. The sessions will be from 9 to 11 a.m, in PHS Room E-215. The drop-off for students is the PHS bus parking lot. Students are responsible for their own transportation.
