Scavenger Hunt coming to Old Towne Petersburg
From the Old Towne Merchants Group: Shopping and dining in Old Towne just got a little more interesting, thanks to an innovative effort sponsored by the Old Towne Merchants Group. The first-ever Old Towne Scavenger Hunt will run from May 9th to May 15, 2008 and will give participants a chance to become more familiar with the city, as well as win cash and prizes. Read more >

Cpl. Gilstrap to be our bike patrol officer
Yesterday the Petersburg Bureau of Police announced their selection of the new Downtown Bicycle Beat Officer during the 3pm opening of the new visitors kiosk. Corporal Matthew P. Gilstrap will soon be patrolling the downtown area as its newest bike officer. This position was created through a partnership developed between The Retail Merchant Association, Old Town Merchant Group and the Petersburg Bureau of Police, now led by Colonel John I. Dixon. Bikes are back — come show your support of reinstituted police program
The Petersburg Bureau of Police announces their partnership with Old Town Merchants and the Retail Merchants Association during the Dec. 4 (joint) Council meeting at 6:55 pm in the Petersburg High School Auditorium. The Partnership will involve an announcement to reinstitute the foot beat Officer to the patrol function in the area of the downtown and Old Town merchant areas. Read more >

New Year’s in Petersburg: Red Light Burlesque & Ball of the Centuries
Holy Cow. This year, the place to be on New Year’s Eve is Old Towne Petersburg. Sycamore Rouge will be bringing back the popular Red Light Burlesque, featuring the Mad Tea Party, Christabel and the Jons, and the Modern Burlesque Brigade’s show “Ballad of a Beautiful Sex Monster.” And if that’s not enough, Old Towne Catering will be hosting Ball of the Centuries, a costume party featuring the Upper East Side Big Band. Ball of the Centuries fundraiser
Dress in period costumes or black tie and help the Old Towne merchants raise funds toward their spring 2008 heritage festival. The Ball will be Sep 22 at the Black Swan. The city-owned building at Old and Sycamore shuts down local business
Re: the city-owned building at Old and Sycamore [update: address is 8 W. Old St.] — the one whose facade has been coughing bricks onto both the sidewalk and the roof of the Retreat next door for weeks (I hear two fell just yesterday as a retailer’s client was loading her car) — Well, part of the roof caved in. The two blocks west of Old and Sycamore are blocked to traffic, with the expected negative impact to merchants and restaurants on the given blocks. But worse, the Retreat has been shut down by the fire marshall: Read more >
“Notice. This building is unsafe and its use or occupany has been prohibited by the building official….” This sign is accompanied by: “Pick up paychecks at Maria’s.” Thus, a local business is now under order to shut down until the city stabilizes or demo’s its own property, something the owner of this business has no power to control.
