Cameron Foundation’s latest grant cycle awards $2.7 million to 25 nonprofits in the region
During its most recent meeting in June, The Cameron Foundation’s board approved $2,745,482 in new grant funding for 25 nonprofits throughout the Tri-Cities and Southside Virginia. This is the Foundation’s second of three grant cycles in 2008, with the third to conclude in October. Read more >

Stories-N-Storefronts debuts at Friday for the Arts
What do you get when you mix art, windows, and downtown Petersburg? Stories-n-Storefronts! Petersburg’s new initiative, which helps to clean, restore and decorate the windows of vacant buildings, is expected to take the city by storm. The grand unveiling of the first phase of the project on Upper Sycamore Street will take place this Friday, July 11 in conjunction with Friday for the Arts!, beginning at 6pm at the Downtown Express Building, 110 N. The James House runs Hearts of Gold fundraiser
The Hearts of Gold Campaign welcomes your unwanted or broken gold items during our June fundraiser for The James House. Call 804-458-2704 for more information on this program to help create escape, safety, healing and support for people who have experienced domestic or sexual violence. The James House serves lower Chesterfield county south to Emporia. From that area, over 1,000 abused children and women were helped in 2007. Believe in a brighter day. Share your unwanted gold.

Statewide nonprofit and social entrepreneurship program kicks off in Petersburg
Thirty undergraduate and graduate students from throughout Virginia arrive in Petersburg this week for the start of the Phoenix Project’s 2008 Nonprofit Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program (NLP). The students will live and work in Petersburg for the next six weeks and gain the knowledge, skills and connections to succeed as the next generation of nonprofit leaders and social entrepreneurs for Virginia.

Free kidney health screening
The National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias will hold a free kidney health screening on Saturday, May 31, 10:00am - 2:00pm at Southside Regional Medical Center (801 South Adams St., Petersburg, VA, 23803). Physicians and nurses will be on site to conduct testing and answer questions about kidney disease prevention. Referrals for follow-up care will be provided to those who appear to be at risk. Cameron Foundation solicits nominations for outstanding nonprofits to receive up to $80,000
The Cameron Foundation has announced that it is soliciting nominations for its two annual recognition award programs. The awards total $80,000 for nonprofit organizations within the Foundation’s service area of Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell and the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, Sussex and the portion of Chesterfield County lying south of Rt. 10. The awards will be presented annually at The Cameron Foundation’s October Grants Award Ceremony. Read more >

Speak Up to Protect Family Involvement and Help Students with Disabilities Succeed
From the folks at JustChildren of the Legal Aid Justice Center: The Virginia Department of Education’s Draft Special Education Regulations make major cuts to parents’ rights to partner with schools. In addition to putting up barriers to family involvement, the draft regulations also create unfair rules and propose changes which will hurt the success of students with disabilities. The voices of families, teachers, students, and others who care about children with disabilities need to be heard at upcoming public hearings to ensure the draft regulations go back to the drawing board! Virginia needs to continue current protections and improve students’ opportunities for long-term success. Read more >

Pathways opens doors
Over 250 people packed the hall at 1200 W. Washington St. to take part in Pathways’ Open House and Dedication Ceremony on April 6. The event attracted residents, donors, volunteers and city officials alike. As people were still arriving, the main hall was filled with the melodic sound of the Celestial Messengers, a local acapella ensemble. Dwala Ferrell, Executive Director of Pathways, told of the humble beginnings of the non-profit community development corporation, housed in a rented warehouse for the last eight years. Read more >

LINC (Legal Information Network for Cancer) expands service area
As a recipient of grants from both the Cameron Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Legal Information Network for Cancer is expanding its service territory to the Crater Health District. This grant allows LINC to provide services to residents of the Petersburg area as well as Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Sussex and the portion of Chesterfield County that lies south of Route 10. Walking tour, Historic architecture of Petersburg
Willie Graham, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Curator of Architecture, will lead a free walking tour through Old Towne Petersburg’s historic architecture explaining how the popular frame and brick technology changed and developed over the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
