A message from District 19 Community Services Board, forwarded from PCPS: District 19 Community Services Board is a proud partner of Petersburg Public Schools.  In the past we have worked closely with the school system and other local community partners and agencies to help address students’ needs including behavioral/mental health services, substance abuse services, and prevention programs.  As the local Community Service Board, we are tasked with assessing individual and population needs, linking individuals to appropriate services in the community, and encouraging participation in programs and services.  We are committed to providing the highest quality services.  If we can be of any assistance throughout the upcoming school year, please contact us.

Crater Health District to address students’ health questions; Teacher vacancies down

From PCPS’ Cliff Davis, re: the most recent school board meeting: The Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools tonight approved a new partnership with the Crater Area Health District, after a presentation by Dr. Patricia Radcliffe, Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel for the Petersburg City Public Schools; and Dr. Kay Rankin, Health Director of the Crater Health District. The Crater Health District will send a registered nurse into the Petersburg City Public Schools, for a half-day per week, to be available to talk with students and promote health issues. He or she will not dispense medication or make a diagnosis, but will seek to answer questions that students may have.

Petersburg Health Dept. to hold evening immunization clinics for children

In order to serve parents of school age children, the Petersburg Health Department (301 Halifax Street) will hold special immunization clinics on Tuesday, August 26 and Tuesday, September 2, from 8:30am until 7:00pm. These are walk-in clinics — no appointment is necessary. These clinics will help parents make sure that their child has all of the necessary immunizations that are required for school entry. The Health Department also holds regular immunization clinics every Tuesday, from 1:00pm until 3:30pm.

Y Street, a statewide tobacco prevention youth empowerment campaign in Virginia, is introducing a new program that will award $2000 grants to various high school student organizations that are committed to working with Y Street in curbing youth smoking.

Free kidney health screening

The National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias will hold a free kidney health screening on Saturday, May 31, 10:00am - 2:00pm at Southside Regional Medical Center (801 South Adams St., Petersburg, VA, 23803). Physicians and nurses will be on site to conduct testing and answer questions about kidney disease prevention. Referrals for follow-up care will be provided to those who appear to be at risk.

LINC (Legal Information Network for Cancer) expands service area

As a recipient of grants from both the Cameron Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Legal Information Network for Cancer is expanding its service territory to the Crater Health District. This grant allows LINC to provide services to residents of the Petersburg area as well as Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Sussex and the portion of Chesterfield County that lies south of Route 10.

Diabetes health class

“I Have Diabetes, Now What Do I Eat?” will be presented Monday, March 17, 1-4pm at Petersburg Health Department, 301 Halifax St. To register, call 862-8976. This workshop provides up-to-date nutrition information that participants can use to plan meals that are heart healthy and will improve their blood glucose control. Topics: the Food Guide Pyramid, nutrient effects on blood glucose, serving sizes, reading food labels, use of non-nutritive sweeteners, fats, and fiber.

Grand Opening, Appomattox Area Health and Wellness Center

The public is invited to the Grand Opening of Appomattox Area Health and Wellness Center on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 4:00 pm at 321C Poplar Drive. Following the formal opening ceremonies, there will be tours, refreshments, and a Health Fair. Also, Optima Health will be providing free flu vaccines for anyone over 18 and there will be door prizes for those completing the Health Fair.

Sign up for free flu shots

The Crater Health District will be conducting a Mass Flu Clinic on Nov. 1, 2007 at Union Train Station, 103 River Street. Flu shots will be provided to adults free of charge. Appointments are required. To make an appointment, call 862-7600 or 862-8916 (appointment lines are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9am-11am and 1pm-3pm). You do not have to be a Petersburg resident to participate.

Upcoming health-related events for students

Petersburg students are invited to join other kids from the Tri-Cities to celebrate Nickelodeon’s “Let’s Just Play” campaign. The first event is “Worldwide Day of Play,” 12-4pm this Saturday, Sept. 29 at Hopewell High School [map]. The Day of Play will feature challenge zones; chaos challenges; health and wellness vendors, cooking demonstrations, health and wellness screenings, a basketball tournament, prizes and inflatables. The events are meant to help counter childhood obesity and encourage activity. The second event is the Ron McNair 5k Walk/Run, to be held at 8 a.m. Oct. 20 at Virginia State University.
