Community invited to participate in Route 36 clean-up project
On October 18, 2008, Task Force 36 and the Phoenix Project will bring together volunteers from around the Commonwealth for the betterment of Petersburg, Virginia. Focusing on a new initiative to revitalize the Route 36 corridor, students from several universities, including the College of William & Mary, Virginia State University, and Richard Bland College, and soldiers from Fort Lee will be cleaning up the area between the Fort and downtown Petersburg and landscaping around the “Petersburg Welcomes You” signage at the entrance to the City. Fort Lee Oktoberfest this Saturday

Put on your lederhosen! The Fort Lee Oktoberfest is Saturday, October 11, from 5-11pm at the Fort Lee Post Field House. German food, music, beverages, and bakery will be on hand, and KidZone will have activities for the kids. Open to the public. Admission is $6 for adults, and free for children under age 11. Fourth at the Fort Independence Day Celebration
The annual Fourth at the Fort will be at Fort Lee’s Williams Stadium, Friday July 4th, from 2-10pm. The stadium is on Lee Avenue. The event starts at 2pm with food, music, an arts and crafts festival, and KidZone (inflatable rides and games for kids). A fireworks show will begin at approximately 9:35pm. This event is free and open to the public. To access Fort Lee, those without DoD decals must show a driver’s license, current car registration, and proof of insurance. Adult passengers will need to show a driver’s license or some other form of legal identification. Parking is free; guards at the gate and signs will provide directions to parking. Earth Day events at Fort Lee - today
In today’s RTD: the lineup includes “a green product expo, Standards of Learning-based workshops by the Science Museum of Virginia, a presentation on building a sustainable environment, prize drawings, and wildlife and hands-on displays.” The events will be from 11am-7pm. Military Officers present $6900 to Quartermaster Foundation, Fort Lee
COL (R) Victoria Revilla, President of the local Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) chapter, and four other board directors of the chapter presented a $6,900.00 check to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Foundation on March 20 during the annual meeting of the foundation board. Receiving the check on behalf of the Foundation was GEN Thompson, President of the QM Foundation and LTG Gregg, Advisor to the foundation board. This is the second year in a row that the Southside Virginia Chapter has won tops honors in the “Give Me 10!” national recruiting campaign — recruiting 701 new members for the MOAA and the second year that they have presented most of their award winnings to the museum that is supported by the QM Foundation. Meeting on proposed demolition
From the folks at Historic Petersburg Foundation: HPF’s History Committee Chairman, Bob Kennedy recently learned that Ft. Lee plans to demolish the Davis House to make room for another unit coming to post. As you may know, the Davis House is the only extant structure from WWI Camp Lee, and was built from 1915-1917. An ice sculpture of a spaceman, chocolate figures adorning elaborate displays by culinary teams from around the world, flames shooting from skillets manned by teams of chefs and specialists all came together as part of the final culinary competition at the field house on the post of Fort Lee. $750,000 for transportation improvements around Fort Lee

An Economic Impact Analysis of Fort Lee 2006-2013
The PDF document, prepared by the Virginia Employment Commission, is available here (750KB). A few numbers from the document: in 2007, construction will increase from $32m to $220m; in 2008, this figure will be $507.7m; 2012 and 2013 will see construction expenditures of $275m per year. The big personnel increase is expected in 2009-2010. The compensation impact: 2006, $778.9m; 2007, $930m; 2008-2011, $1.2b per year; 2012-2013, $1.4b per year.
