Volunteer opportunities available at Pamplin Historical Park will be addressed at a public open house on Monday, January 12th at 6:30 pm, and again on Wednesday, January 14th at 2:00 pm.  Both events will be held at the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, located at 6125 Boydton Plank Road, in Petersburg, Virginia. 

There are a variety of tasks available for those who wish to share their time and talents at this award-winning historical site located in northern Dinwiddie County.  Attendees at the open house meetings will learn about the variety of functions that can be supported by volunteers. Education, interpretation, visitor services, retail services, administration, maintenance, gardening, marketing, visitor services, IT support, and library maintenance are several examples. Volunteers from all walks of life are welcome to attend, from children to seniors.  With the flexible schedule that many home-schooled youth maintain, the Park is an ideal place to for them to support education and preservation while expanding their knowledge and life experience in a safe environment.

Along with the regular activities offered to our individual visitors, the Park also offers interactive, SOL-based programs for student groups. Over 30,000 students, from Virginia to Hawaii, have already registered to visit the Park this spring, so from March through mid-June the need for volunteers is especially great. For Jim Pyle, a retiree who volunteers one day per week, “The most enjoyable time is when I see the kids learning something and enjoying themselves at the same time.”

The Park’s goal is to offer volunteers an opportunity to help preserve history and to share with our guests some of that spirit that makes the Park so special. Adam Craig, who began volunteering in his teens and now serves as a part-time employee, sums it up this way, “This is the place that taught me to love history, so if there’s a need here that I can help to fulfill, why would I want to be anywhere else?”
