Kiwanis honored by Petersburg Schools for reviving Terrific Kids program

Five men were honored on June 18, at the Board meeting of the Petersburg City Public Schools, by R.E. Lee Elementary School Principal Barbara Patterson. These members of the Petersburg Kiwanis Club provided Lee students with supplies and other educational tools during May and June of the 2007-2008 school year. Their goal was to revive the long-standing Kiwanis “Terrific Kids Program” in Petersburg.

“They recognized the students who were doing well, one or two in each class.” Patterson said. “Next year, they will start with us in September.”

The volunteers have enjoyed working with the students and staff at Lee. “All of us are very impressed with the respect and the discipline of the young children. It is a very well-run elementary school,” said Kiwanis member William Barga.

Kiwanis (from a Native American expression meaning “we trade” or “we share our talents”) is a global organization of volunteers, more than 260,000 adults and 320,000 youth, who are dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time, through guidance and example. Kiwanis members work to develop future generations of leaders. They revitalize neighborhoods, organize youth-sports programs, tutor, build playgrounds, and perform countless other projects to help children and communities, according to www.kiwanis.org.

Honored were Kiwanis members William Barga, Tony Reese, Ronald Revish, Charlie Williams and Donald Schroeder. Mr. Barga works for Wilkins Advertising; Mr. Reese and Mr. Revish for Virginia Probation and Parole in the Petersburg area; Mr. Williams for Long & Foster Realty; and Mr. Schroeder is retired from Fort Lee.
