Petersburg middle schools take up BDPA challenge for first time

The Richmond Chapter of Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) presented the Middle School Computer Terminology Quiz Bowl on May 24, at the Times Dispatch Building in Mechanicsville. Students from Vernon Johns and Peabody middle schools in Petersburg were excited to represent Petersburg City Public Schools in this event for the first time. Teams had to answer questions about Computer Science and Technology, in a Jeopardy game show-style competition, testing their quick recall of very detailed, technical information.

VJMS earned a fifth place win and Peabody came in sixth. Their teachers vowed to “try again next year and bring back one of the top three awards.”

Ms. Gloria Greene, Director of Technology for the Petersburg City Public Schools, encouraged the students to participate and the participants appreciated her support.

Team members were, from VJMS, Steven Terry, Derrius Maye, Leilia Magee, Jaki Walker, and Gina Moore; from Peabody, Tyran Taylor, Joshua Hayes, Alvonte’ Jiggetts, and Mercedes Kate. Their coaches were Ms. Sandra Ruffin and Ms. Sheila Spikes.

The BDPA is a pro-active community service organization with the mission of educating the community through technological knowledge.
