Is there any schedule available on the web?
I don’t think there is a schedule. I will call Wayne Crocker, Director of Petg. Pub. Library to see if there is a schedule of events prepared.
I think this is a very good thing that the library is doing. I hope they will stop with the “City of Readers” program though. I think it is a large misconception.
i think it is all related to reading.
“City of Readers” should be a slogan recognizing a fact, not someone’s notion of clever spin.
You are correct James, but I also agree with Paul.
The biggest issue I have with this is that these photos (a waste of money) because when was the last time any of those in the photo read with these children. I find it to be quite offensive to take these pictures, yet never step back into those very same schools or buildings to take part of what you read.
I agree with you half-way John H.
Sure, the posters were a waste of money, and yes, they are free publicity for diverse characters such as David Canada and the Fresh Prince’s aunt.
But look, whatever anyone thinks of ANY of these people, Canada’s job is to manage a whole bunch of city departments — not to read to other people’s kids.
Aunt Viv’s job is to run a movie studio at a profit — not to read to other people’s kids.
It is the elementary teacher’s job to read to kids. It is the PARENT’S job to read to the kids. If the parent can’t read, the parent should not be like Huck Finn’s dad, but should be saying “you want to end up like ME? READ to ME!!!!”
You seem to go way above and beyond, both for your kids, and for the community’s, and for that I have profound respect.
I’m not even sure what the whole campaign was supposed to accomplish, unless the goal was to serve up some “PC” nonsense for others to mock petersburg with.
Actually, I guess I DO know what it was meant to accomplish: GOVERNMENTS, not just petersburg’s, like to show that they are doing SOMETHING related to the people’s problems — even if what they are actually doing is wasting taxpayers money on self-serving propaganda.
Makes it all the harder when someone with REAL solutions tries to run against them.
This happens world-wide.
This is not imply that I am a Canada or DMR hater.
I am sure they were ASKED to participate in the program, not the originators.
Correct Shawn, they were asked. Yet to say you are “A City of Readers” and then complete the sentence by saying that you have an illiteracy rate of almost 40% is stupid.
But if you want to campaign this put up pictures of the teachers, and the adminstrators to the schools, because they are the ones that are there everyday, not these city celebrities that will never see these children again. Put the kids in pictures with their parents reading to them. Make it believable, not photo oppotunities for those that do not take the time to go back and see these projects through.
Because once the cameras are gone our children are still left behind.
Post #1, there is no schedule on the web and only a list of some of the entertainment in todays Progress Index.
Does anyone have some photos of this event they’d like to share? If so, email me at info AT pburgpn DOT net.
