City clean-up events

On Saturday, May 17th volunteers from downtown businesses, the Phoenix Project, LISC, Elder Homes, Trinity Development, the City of Petersburg and Fort Lee will be joining forces to conduct two major clean-ups within the city.

The Sycamore Sweep will be held on N. Sycamore from Tabb St. to Washington St. and will concentrate on removing debris from streets and storefronts.

The Ross Court Clean Up will focus on cleaning the neighborhood around Ross and Harding Streets.

All volunteers interested in helping ensure that Petersburg becomes the cleanest, neatest, prettiest city in the country are welcome.

Participants will meet in the Courthouse parking lot at Sycamore and Tabb Streets at 8am. Trinity Development and LISC are providing complementary coffee and donuts and cleanup materials. Elder Homes is coordinating the Fort Lee volunteers and providing more supplies and complimentary drinking water for the volunteers.

Although cleanup supplies will be provided, it’s always more comfy to wear your own work gloves, so you can really lend a hand!

For more information on Sycamore Sweep, call Kimberly Ann Calos at 586-1633.
For more information on the Ross Court Cleanup, call Trinity Development at 433-8927.

This might sound a bit jaded but thats basically … what, two blocks of Sycamore, right? Ermmm a good start and really great idea but…”major clean-up” Je pense pas.

I’d be more impressed if it was the Wythe Street & I-95 interchange…I swear I’m just gonna haul my butt out there with trash bags one day …. THAT needs to be cleaned up - it’s embarassing to have colleagues, friends, and family remark about that CONSTANTLY.

Reminds me though - I really should thank that neighbor guy that regularly/routinely picks up trash along Berkeley, North Blvd, and Sycamore….all by himself.

Eh…and what is Public Works budget again??

Sorry, crappy day at work makes Chuck a dull boy BUT it is Friday….AMEN!!!!

    I think this is great.

J’espere que nous pouvons faire tout les rues, Chuck.

I go over and pick up on the 95 to washington exit occasionally. But it is usually enough to just keep the sidewalk in front of my house clean.

I’ve noticed some positive things recently:

I was at the river today — instead of the usual thugs, I saw some optimistic and friendly looking people who I assume were from VA state.

I’ve been seeing more people running on the sidewalks. When I first visited petersburg, you’d never see ANYONE exercising — later, you’d occationally see someone from from fort lee.

Now, I see folks jogging around a LOT more often. Hopefully it this place will have as healthy an atmosphere as the fan some day.

Shawn - no wonder that exit always looks nicer!! So If Keith and I show up at Wythe/95 with bags and pick up sticks - we like won’t get in trouble with the police or anything…right?

I would think that would be a PR disaster for the Petersburg PD, who certainly have better things to do.

I don’t know about the state police.

I thought about doing it for a LONG time, but it was the appearance of signs adverting various websites (petersburgdatesdotdork, stevenbuyshousescashdotidiot) that finally provoked me to get out there.

My ultimate goal is to bring a broom and get at all the broken glass and cigs.

If we have one thing in abundance, it is convicts. Too bad someone can’t figure out how to get more of them out there helping to pay for all the public money they drain out of the system.

You know, I actually mentioned that to Vanessa (Sheriff Crawford) and Carole when I worked closely with them at the CB. After seeing an article about what Woody was doing with inmates in Richmond - using them to clean up vacant/blighted areas and at the same time the inmates learned landscaping type skills.

Vanessa mentioned that they had planned something to clean up the school areas but, IMHO, the streets need it more. Though, I have yet to see any inmate groups out doing any type of pick up…

Oh while I’m on my creative streak of shirts…I just ordered myself two of these - hehe a la OBX sticker:

Every now and then I do see people from the local jailed (dressed up in their black/white uniforms) out doing some things such as cleanup, etc downtown. but it is VERY sporadic.

Hey Chuck, it must be all the rain/grey skies — what’s CB (in #5)?

And the sticker is great! Where does one go to order them?

CB = Compensation Board which is essentially the fiscal agent for the States portion of the budgets for all of the Constitutional Officers in the Commonwealth. Constitutional Officers being all of the Sheriffs, Treasurers, Commonwealths Attorneys, Clerks of the Court, Commissioners of Revenues, and Directors of Finance.

I loved handling $350M in budgets for the Sheriffs and Regional Jails.

Re: Stickers - I went online and found a place that makes them….hmmmm maybe I could market them? Nah I’m not that enterprising. LOL. I’ll email you the site.

    COOL!!

I am glad they are going to redo the Sears houses (now I want to ride over and see what this looks like) and not just rip em down to throw up some cheaply made investment property junk.
