Pathways opens doors
Over 250 people packed the hall at 1200 W. Washington St. to take part in Pathways’ Open House and Dedication Ceremony on April 6. The event attracted residents, donors, volunteers and city officials alike. As people were still arriving, the main hall was filled with the melodic sound of the Celestial Messengers, a local acapella ensemble. Dwala Ferrell, Executive Director of Pathways, told of the humble beginnings of the non-profit community development corporation, housed in a rented warehouse for the last eight years.
Now, with the help of volunteers and a capital campaign, Pathways has moved to its current home on Washington St. This former 1960s supermarket facility has been transformed into a centralized operational center for Pathways’ many community and neighborhood programs.
Roger L. Gregory, a federal judge on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, was guest speaker at the event. Judge Gregory is a Petersburg native and graduated with honors from Virginia State University. Other speakers included Petersburg Mayor Annie Mickens, Delegate Rosalyn Dance and Pathways’ first YouthBuild GED recipient Taquita Williamson. After the ribbon was cut, the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Jazz Ensemble played standards while attendants took self-guided tours of the new facility.
Boasting two classrooms, an arts center, computer lab, free specialty clinic, resource center, multi-purpose community room, construction lab, commercial kitchen and administrative offices, the new operational center will enhance Pathways’ capacity for Building Lives and Awakening Hope in Petersburg.

I am interested in finding out if this is the place in Petersburg that offers dental help to those who cant afford it. I read about a place in the Progress Index about four to six monhs ago and gave the paper to someone else and failed to write the info down for myself. Can you please let me know if this is the place.
Thank you in advance..
Hi Tawanna. I made a few phone calls for you.
The folks at the Petersburg Health Dept. suggested the following for overall dental/health care:
1) Appomattox Area Health and Wellness Center
321 Poplar Drive
Petersburg, VA 23805
(804) 733-3506
2) Hopewell-Prince George Community Health Center
4260 Crossing Blvd. Suite 2
Prince George, Virginia 23875
804-452-5800
They said that dental/health care is provided at the above facilities to those with or without insurance. In the latter case, the fee is based on one’s income (the most recent 3 pay stubs and ID are required). If one does not have any income, then a letter is required and some sort of nominal fee will be assessed - for all the details as relevant to one’s own situation, best bet is to call the above providers directly.
re: Pathways, 1) they do host free dental clinics one Saturday a year, usually in the summer, on an appointment basis only. They do not have a date set yet, and thus are not taking appointments yet. 2) They also hold free cardiac clinics.
