The School Board meets tonight to, among other things, vote on the proposed Reconstruction plan. At the Public Hearing Monday night, there seemed to be a consensus that the Board had already cast their ballots and that the proposal was already in place. It will be interesting to see if the Board Members and PPS Administration heeded any of the voiced concerns. I, for one, am not in opposition to making changes; my concern is that it seems that those in power have not given enough thought to the plans for implementation and evaluation.
I made the following suggestions to the Board:
1. Make a long-term commitment to the schedule change.
2. Recognize that any new strategy or schedule requires adequate trial time.
3. Develop a multi-year implementation plan; don’t change your minds and begin developing a new plan halfway into the school year.
4. Ensure that the schedule changes are incorporated into broader goals that will benefit our children.
5. Guarantee that we have laid groundwork for successful implementation and that we have in place a reliable plan for measuring progress.
I think the suggestions are reasonable and am anxious to see if there was any “listening” at the “hearing”.
