VA’s top Republicans support 3rd Lincoln-Douglass-Mahone Dinner
Linas Kojelis, Chairman of the Petersburg Republican Committee (PRC) announced today that almost 80 guests have registered for the third annual Lincoln-Douglass-Mahone Dinner and Silent Auction, on April 4th, at 6 p.m. at Old Town Catering (9 W. Old St). The guest of honor will be Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell, the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2009 Virginia governor’s race.
“With several days to go, we have three times more RSVP’s than last year,” stated Mr. Kojelis. “It’s clear that Petersburg and Tri-Cities Republicans are all united behind our great Attorney General.”
In addition to remarks by the Attorney General, the program will feature a tribute to the Rev. Martin Luther King and a National Anthem duet sung by PRC Member Lauren Barboza and Senator Steve Martin (VA-11th). Other distinguished guests will include former Senator Eva Scott (first woman elected to Virginia Senate), Delegate Riley Ingram (VA-62nd), Delegate Jeff Frederick (VA-52nd and candidate for chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia), Dinwiddie Commonwealth’s Attorney Lisa Caruso, RPV 4th District Chairman Jason Gray and Prince George GOP Chairman Dan Robinson.
Miss Barboza announced that various special items will be available for the silent auction, including a lithograph by U.S. Senator John Warner, a print of the U.S. Capitol signed by Congressman Randy Forbes (R-4th), framed posters from the Ronald Reagan Library and a pewter Jefferson cup from Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, as well as original works by local artists and dinners at Petersburg and Tri-Cities restaurants.
The evening’s entertainment will feature Sounds of the Triangle – a selection of music and songs from the great entertainers including Sam Cooke, Chubby Checker and Jerry Butler who performed in Petersburg at the Halifax Triangle’s historic Rialto Theater in its heyday.
The menu draws upon Petersburg’s rich culinary and historic heritage. During the silent auction, guest will have a choice of Jeff Davis Punch (served at Starvation Balls during the 1864-1865 Siege of Petersburg) or Ronald Reagan Punch (commemorating the return of alcoholic beverages to the White House after President Carter’s Administration) and a choice of Old Town or Walnut Hill Salad. Desert will feature the popular period Granted It’s Good Rice Pudding, a variation of authentic Civil War-era Republican Pudding favored by General U.S. Grant (with a splash of rum).

Chubbby Checker!
I remember that guy! He lived WAY past his heyday. :)
Kudos to the Mr. Kojelis and the republicans. Linas has stated as one of his knock-off goals that if total control of petersburg can be wrested from the democrats, BOTH parties will take the district more seriously. He’s right about that. Just look at ohio.
The celebration of Martin Luther King is a good idea, as it will send a clear and positive message and it will simultaneously further marginalize any crypto-racists that feel more at home in the republican party for now.
Maybe someday they will become so marginalized that they will form their own party…
SOMEBODY’s doing something right at petersburg’s Republican HQ.
Will the band play “DIXIE”?? It was of course Lincoln’s favorite song! It was played at his Inauguration and also written by a Yankee from Ohio.

YAY for balance!!
/sarcasm
The Ron Paul folks had posted loads of info re: their meetings, but I think that thread was lost when the wheels fell off with this site’s first webhost back in February. The Dems though? Not a peep per my recollection.
…cause we’re ninjas! =)
Sorry didn’t mean to thread-jack.
Chuck, what are the petersburg dems up to? Talking about how they are all “Queen bees?”
Passing resolutions praising academic standards at VSU?
You tell me.
Awww Shawn come on now, that’s about as fair as me lumping all of the GOP in with G. ‘I’m a talking monkey’ Dubyah or Dick ‘BAE Scandal’ Cheney.
But as to what the P’Burg Dems are up to, I’ve actually asked and am waiting on some information to pass along so there’s a bit of balance. =)
There are bad people in both parties, no? I always see people tossing the term “libs” or “liberals” around and sadly, didn’t REALLY know what it meant so I looked it up - Viv la Wiki!
Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Different forms of liberalism may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy, and a transparent system of government.
I guess I don’t understand how those are bad ideals. I think both parties have good and bad ideas *shrug* I guess I could be a … hybrid either a conservative democrat or…. a liberal republican =)
When I lived in Boulder Co, I was accused in disapproval of being sooo Republican. 3 mos. later, I was in TX A&M country and accused of being sooo Democrat. Interesting how context can matter.
I was raised by uneducated Democrats who believed in the new deal. I have rallied and campaigned with independents, I am a practicing Republican today because local politics demand a balance.
I agree that there are good and bad people on both sides of the aisle. The more we come together, the easier it will be to distinguish one from the other.
In this blue city, in this red state, we are building purple bridges.
Chuck,
You could indeed bring up W or Cheney, or even Randy Forbes — if we were talking about them.
We are talking about petersburg dems and repubs, no?
If we wanted to get to the origins of words, I am defined as a “classical liberal,” unfortuantely, the meaning of the word has changed, if you haven’t noticed. It now means “progessive with communist sympathies and little business sense”
Brenda, I was considered too conservative in NY, but have consistantly voted democratic or independant here, though I will probably vote for Mccain. Many republicans in virginia have a strange fetish for flags, I’ve noticed — and a predilection for xenophobia.
But that is changing… the “REAL” virginia keeps being pushed farther into the tail of western VA. Just ask George Allen.
Issues should bring common grounds for solutions parties are so, 20th century.
Wow!

The republicans are SOOOoo lucky they didn’t choose a white southern conservative to be their standard bearer.
Obama did the right thing by not responding; that kind of joke speaks for itself.
