Referrals
By request, call this an attempt at a referrals thread. Please limit discussions to those entities you recommend, not those you don’t recommend. If that sounds too narrow to be useful, maybe someone could start a yahoo group that locals could refer to for same? Thoughts/opinions on the concept itself are welcome.

Thank you Miss. B.!!!
Okay so, Keith and I are going to be looking for a house painter and someone to do a privacy fence (more to keep the dogs in than neighbors out) and don’t know any contractors in the ‘Burg. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Also, does anyone know of a pet sitter in the Burg?
Along that same line - where is the closest dog park??
Richmond area dog parks: click here (and there’s one in the works in Church Hill, Chimborazo area) — this side of the Appomattox though… ???
re: painters — I’ve often seen signs for Creative Painting (Painters?) around town (in front of houses they are working on). You might want to give them a ring.
Go to petersburgtv.com and check out the doggie park interviews.

1. creative painters are highly rec’d by folks. I don’t know if they have been able to maintain the quality since they have grown (ie, the original polish guys did great work, and due to their success have hired out more of the labor to locals)
2. dogpark.
My wife LOVES to take our dogs to Barker’s Field (southeast of the Carrillion/WWI monument) — but *I* feel it is too wasteful to go all the way up there just for the dogs.
What I and my wife have long hoped for is that the park on low st. be converted into a dogpark. Why low street? The park is central, and I have never seen it used for ANYTHING other than dogplay.
I think a dogpark would make petersburg a more attractive place to live, and we certainly have an overabundance of parks in this town — but my wife and I see petersburg as a former war-zone, filled with political mines the location of which we can only guess since we didn’t bury them. Hence, we do not want to spearhead a movement to have a dogpark.
But we would be glad to jump on any bandwagon :), and we have decided that this particular location would provoke the least opposition, given what little we know. Dogpark: a petersburg amenity that would cost taxpayers zilch.
Not being a dog owner (yet with SHMBO wanting a dog), I have a question.
What makes a dog park different than any other?
Just curious as to what the facilities would be.
OOPS I typoed….
As all guys know that’s “SWMBO’ed”
If you walk your dog in your hood, you usually are required to use a leash. A dog park is a large fenced-in area where you can get rid of the leash and let the dog run around and burn some energy. Usually there is a two-gate entry system so that you can enter/exit the park with your furry friend without some other dog slipping out and heading for the hills.
tg,
I’m not sure what the difference is, except that a dog-park is declared such, and dog owners bring their dogs there — not just to run around free, but also to be better socialized (meet different types of dogs and people.)
The dog-park in my ome area was just a declared, little used area in a much larger park. Same with the one in falls church. The one in byrd park is
the most the most formal I’ve seen, with the double fence, posted rules, etc.
I’ve started a separate thread on dog parks. To keep things easier to follow, I’ll copy/paste the related comments above to that thread, so that all further dog park comments can reside in the same thread.
Can anyone recommend a local dentist? I want something closer. Forest Hill Ave worked great when I was in Woodland Heights but…not so much now.
Good question. I still drive out to Parham in the West End, and should probably take the leap to find someone local.
There must be some good dentists in the chester area.
There is a great dentist in Chester (just west of) on Ironbridge Rd., right across from Shoosmith’s. His name is David Beam…717-5100. Also, if anyone is looking for PVC rails for your porch..American Rail Company is the answer…590-1412, Danny Elko, a local person.
Anyone know if there is a Freecycle group for Pburg? I couldn’t find one - didn’t see anything for Colonial Heights either…maybe a Tri-Cities would be good!! Richmond Freecycle has like 11K members.
What’s a Freecycle?
A forum for OFFERING unwanted items to reduce landfill and share! Typically you have to “OFFER” something first before you submit a “WANT” but, it’s a great way to get rid of stuff that is still usable.
I gave away a lawnmower (still worked)when I got my new one; people give away things like yard equipment, furniture, clothes, household goods, etc. Heck I know one person who even got a car from Freecycle.
Linkage to the Richmond Freecycle Group:

That’s really cool. You should launch something like this if one doesn’t already exist.
FOUND ONE!!!
Hopewell has a Freecycle that looks to cover Hopewell, PBurg, Colonial Heights, and part of Prince George!

Heh now I can offer up those windows and doors and such in the garage that we inherited when we bought this place. YAY!
Great find! Thanks for sharing with us.
