Opening Reception: Lower Level Meeting Room & Gallery: Past & PresentÔø?A Collection of Events, by George Hughes, a graduate of the VCU School of the Arts. Growing up in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, & then living in the heart of the Fan District while attending VCU, created a certain man vs. nature conflict within Hughes that produced his love for the landscape. The instantaneous expression possible with music has had a great influence on his impressionistic style, which he developed to enhance a creative flow of the mark & an intensity of color that can be accessed only with the natural free flow of landscape painting.

With a large local following, Jackson now has exclusive distribution at the Pink Scottie.

Live Music: Sambaiosis, 9:00 pm to midnight. Sambaiosis is greater Richmond’s premiere Brazilian-based jazz sound, fusing jazz, bossa nova, and Latin rhythms with lyrics in Portuguese, Spanish, English, & Italian. Based on the musical heritage of Brazil, their sound and name are founded on a fusion of samba & baio, a lively music that originated in Brazil’s arid northeast, & that is based on ancient figure or ballroom dances of European origin. Sambaiosis offers up sultry bossa novas & poppin’ sambas, plus adaptations of American classics, with layers of drums & percussion, fiery nylon-stringed guitar, and powerful vocals. Continuing Exhibition: Ground Floor Gallery: Laying the Foundation of a City: Petersburg’s History to 1815, an exhibition on Petersburg’s early history, featuring copies of maps, portraits, and other images, as well as a few artifacts, including a display of miniature portraits of personalities associated with Petersburg.
Continuing Exhibition: Ground Floor Gallery: Petersburg’s Lowndes Stoneware. Features examples of Lowndes pottery including a rare treasure, an exquisitely adorned pitcher that was recently added to the exhibit. The Lowndes pottery operated in the Blandford section of town from 1806 until 1855. The pottery primarily produced utilitarian stoneware pieces for storing and serving food.
Continuing Exhibition: Mezzanine Gallery: A City Endured: Civil War Photographs of Petersburg. Photographs taken by Matthew Brady’s assistants & other photographers during & after the Siege of Petersburg.
Continuing Exhibition: Main Floor, North Gallery: African Americans in the Military: The Petersburg Perspective.

Continuing Exhibit: In the windows of the Leonard Building: Work by Midlothian mosaicist Jacki Sowers, who brings a touch of whimsy to the sometimes staid world of mosaics. Using glass tiles, mirror, porcelain flowers, seashells, pebbles, beads, & ceramic figurines, she embellishes mirrors, tables, urns, wall fountains, & mannequin forms, saying, “anything that doesn’t run fast enough faces the risk of being glued, glitzed, & grouted.”

Continuing Exhibits: New work by Kirsten Kindler, a grant recipient from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2004, who works in oils & extraordinary cut-paper hangings. New oils by former Petersburger Stephen Roebuck, a graduate of U.Va. & Pratt Institute, who teaches at Christ Church School. New watercolors by Petersburg artist Catherine Warnock, who was born in Scotland & lived in California. Her influences are from travel & nature. She is currently studying with Carol Meese. New oils by Petersburg native O. Pollard, who has been painting since 1954.
