Christmas surprise at R.E. Lee Elementary
On December 19th, all the fourth grade students at R.E. Lee Elementary received not only letters, but also gift bags from the volunteers of Capital One. It was a pleasant surprise just before the Christmas Break.
This program with Capital One, Lee’s business partner, has been in progress for seven years. James Turner, their representative, works closely with Yvonne Larch, Lee Guidance Counselor. Throughout the semester an exchange of letters occurs so that the students can demonstrate what they have learned. These letters promote self-esteem, encouragement and friendship.
Ms. Larch visits classrooms to discuss the letter writing as well as the expectations of both the school and Capital One. Posters remind the students that positive behavior, completion of class work and returned homework are required. Frequently, gift bags are delivered that contain educational materials.
Mr. Turner takes time from his work schedule to deliver as well as secure the letters and gift bags. Occasionally, he has the opportunity to meet and greet students that may be in the guidance office.
In January a special ceremony is being planned so that the fourth grade students can meet their “guardian angels” in person.
