Cpl. Gilstrap to be our bike patrol officer

Yesterday the Petersburg Bureau of Police announced their selection of the new Downtown Bicycle Beat Officer during the 3pm opening of the new visitors kiosk. Corporal Matthew P. Gilstrap will soon be patrolling the downtown area as its newest bike officer. This position was created through a partnership developed between The Retail Merchant Association, Old Town Merchant Group and the Petersburg Bureau of Police, now led by Colonel John I. Dixon.

“This deployment was made possible as part of an Old Town Merchant request and a financial commitment by the Retail Merchants Association”, said Chief Dixon. “It is a prime example of how the needs of a community can be met through partnership and commitment.”

Retail Merchant Association President, William Baxter, was on hand to present the Bureau of Police with the new Bicycle. The purchased equipment totaled $2664.41. Corporal Gilstrap, a nine year veteran, was on hand in his new uniform attire and reports he is excited with the new assignment.
