Petersburg Friday for the Arts!, Dec. 14
This month’s Friday for the Arts! will be Dec. 14, 6pm to 10pm. Highlights: Bobby Lynch at the Sol Cooper Gallery and Carol Anna Meese at her new Atelier, exerpts from The Velveten Rabbit at Sycamore Rouge, an open house at nationally acclaimed Appomattox Tile Art, A Chair Affair by Bev Rivers and designer David Montoya at River’s Edge, finely crafted jewelry by Ladysmith, mosaics by Jacki Sowers, Concerts by Candlelight (organ and soprano) at St. Paul’s, the Upper East Side Big Band at Wabi-Sabi, and more — 27 venues will be open this month for the visual arts, 8 for music.
This month’s Friday for the Arts! is dedicated to the memory of Page Roller. May her spirit protect this season of peace and joy!
The free Arts Bus will shuttle visitors between parking lots and all sites.

Opening Reception: Lower Level Meeting Room & Gallery: “Birds of Quantico Creek”Ôø?photographs by Northern Virginia photogrrapher Robert Price, editor and publisher since 1973 of ASTROGRAPH, a magazine devoted to astronomical photography. Price, who served the Navy as project engineer for a number of sensors utilizing visible and infrared light, has been photographing birds and other wildlife for five years. His exhibit features photographs of bird taken in and around Quantico Creek, Virginia, and Little River, South Carolina.

Continuing Exhibit: Chester artist, Fil Aquino, who creates & paints his own room dividers and fireplace screens. His “functional art” is made from pinewood & oak, and painted with oils & acrylics. Aquino has a fine-arts degree from VCU, and specializes in breathtaking wildlife, landscape, and still-life images.

New Exhibit: Abstracts by Terrell Newman. Trained as a cosmetologist, Terrell first became inspired by creating a mural for his salon. Now he works to bring new forms of texture and motion into each piece. Featured this month are several pieces created by Newman since 2005. First Petersburg show.

Carol Meese Atelier: Continuing Exhibit: “Virginia Landscapes” Ôø? recent work by Carol Anna Meese, as introduced in November. As Meese rode throughout central & northern Virginia, she worked fast, capturing fleeting impressions with sketches, and later oil pastel studies. Come see how she has used these to develop final oil paintings on canvas. In her atelier, there will be works in various stages of completion, and viewers may watch as final paintings emerge over the weeks. You might even catch her painting. Don’t miss!

Continuing Exhibit: Upstairs: “Koi Series” by Bobby Lynch, of Richmond & Petersburg. New Exhibit: Tavern: Work by photographer Cathy Wojcian, a native of Tampa, Florida, who moved to Monterey, California, to attend college. There, she worked for The Friends of Photography and several photographers, including John Sexton. Back in Florida in 1986, she studied under and worked for illustrative photographer Sidney Spann and portrait and commercial photographer Thomas Bruce. She has done portraiture, more than 215 weddings, commercial photography (including three album covers, calendars, photography for commercial magazines, and photography of etchings for Disney. She “retired” in 1993 to devote more time to her children, but she hasn’t put her camera to rest. Today, living in Chesterfield County, she has developed a new passion for sports photography.
Live Music: The Upper East Side Big Band, 9:00 pm to midnight, featuring band leader Samson Trinh on sax and an all-star collection of vocalists, keyboard artists, saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonists, guitarists, bass players, and percussionists. Writer / lyricist / producer / composer / arranger / orchestrator / conductor Trinh has been named a 2007 Independent Music Awards Finalist in the Jazz Category for his song, “I Can’t Believe I’m Addicted to O.C.,” which last year won the Jazz Category in the Semi Finalist Division of the International Songwriting Competition. His recent debut CD, Very Strange Night, has been hailed as “an even of gigantic proportions” and as a CD “to buy, one to cherish, and, frankly, one to be astounded about.” Samson Trinh and the Upper East Side Big Band’s vibrant collective spirit capture the essence of the American jazz orchestra. The band will perform some special Christmas songs. Don’t miss!

New Exhibit: Jewelry by Ellen Marie Murphy, whose love of jewelry led her to begin studying the craft while living in Wisconsin. She creates her own lampwork beads from glass rods, adding multiple colors or fine silver to the beads in their molten state. Murphy will be introducing new designs and beads for the holidays.

First Floor Gallery, Landing: New Exhibit: Stunning, colorful oils and watercolors by Greg Young, artist-in-residence at the Crossroads Art Center. Young aims to convey his “inner vision through paintings of people and nature.”

Continuing Exhibition: “Laying the Foundation of a City: Petersburg’s History to 1815,” an exhibition on Petersburg’s early history, featuring copies of maps, portraits, and other images, as well as a few artifacts, including a display of miniature portraits of personalities associated with Petersburg.
Continuing Exhibition: “Petersburg’s Lowndes Stoneware.” Features examples of Lowndes pottery including a rare treasure, an exquisitely adorned pitcher that was recently added to the exhibit. The Lowndes pottery operated in the Blandford section of town from 1806 until 1855. The pottery primarily produced utilitarian stoneware pieces for storing and serving food.

Continuing Exhibit: In the windows of the Leonard Building: Work by Midlothian mosaicist Jacki Sowers, who brings a touch of whimsy to the sometimes staid world of mosaics. Using glass tiles, mirror, porcelain flowers, seashells, pebbles, beads, and ceramic figurines, she embellishes mirrors, tables, urns, wall fountains, and mannequin forms, saying, “anything that doesn’t run fast enough faces the risk of being glued, glitzed, and grouted.”

New Exhibit: One Night Only: “Ladysmith Returns to Old Towne.” Terry Lacy presents her beautiful & unusual handcrafted jewelry, fashioned from sterling silver, pearls, coral, amber, turquoise, lapis, bone, ancient coins, carvings, and abalone. Don’t miss!
Continuing Exhibits: New work by Kirsten Kindler, a grant recipient from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2004, who works in oils and extraordinary cut-paper hangings. New oils by former Petersburger Stephen Roebuck, a graduate of U.Va. and Pratt Institute, who teaches at Christ Church School. New watercolors by Petersburg artist Catherine Warnock, who was born in Scotland and lived in California. Her influences are from travel and nature. She is currently studying with Carol Meese. New oils by Petersburg native O. Pollard, who has been painting since 1954.
