on Math-bots, and Forty & Eight’s presentation of flags to first graders
Peabody Middle School programs math-bots
The seventh grade math students of Peabody Middle School recently participated in a dynamic lesson presented by Aretha Ashire, an educator from the Math/Science Center.
The lesson focused on proportions and ratios that were used to solve distance, rate and time problems. Problem-solving using technology is paramount for students. Students using graphing calculators programmed robots to perform a specific task. The students realized that the programmer must program the robot correctly in order to achieve the desired outcome. This allowed the learners to investigate and understand concepts previously taught in class.
Ashire complimented the students for their active participation in the lesson. She said, “Thanks for sharing your class with me today. I have taught this lesson in other counties and your students have been the most cooperative and well-behaved.”
Betty Knight, Instructional Specialist at Peabody, thought the lesson provided the students with an opportunity to use critical thinking skills, problem solving strategies and technology to collaborate, investigate and maneuver a robot until they achieve desired results.
Derrick Scarborough, Principal of Peabody, thought it was an excellent lesson that forced the students to think creatively and work cooperatively to accomplish their task. Here at Peabody, we have world class teachers and world class students, which allowed this lesson to be successful.
Forty & Eight share patriotic message at Walnut Hill Elementary School
On Wednesday, November 7, members of the Voiture 977, Petersburg Chapter of the Forty & Eight, visited Walnut Hill Elementary School to present flags to the first graders. The visit is a part of the Forty & Eight’s mission to provide “an American flag for every first grader.”
