The review is designed to look at all the functions of the city and how to make it more efficient. According to the proposal by Walker, the final report will distinguish core and required services from discretionary services, the level at which core services will be provided, the relationship between resource expenditures and investments.
The review will also determine whether or not services are being provided in a cost-effective manner.
The study will determine how to streamline government processes and improve efficiencies of the city. And perhaps the study could also point out savings that could be made by improving government operations.
A state-financed efficiency review for Petersburg Public Schools highlighted more than $1 million in savings due to better operations. And that study pointed out many ways the Petersburg Public School System could operate more efficiently. And to its credit, The Petersburg School Board approved many of the recommendations from that study.
So now it Petersburg City Governmentís turn. The study should not be interpreted as a criticism of city government or those who work in the city government. Rather, it is simply a smart move to have expert outsiders look at your operation in order to suggest improvements.
ìThis will be good for the city because itís a good government practice,î Vice Mayor Horace Webb said. ìWeíve also been blessed recently with opportunities for economic and community growth and development, and we must make sure weíre offering the best possible services.î
Today I learned that the meetings may or may not be held Dec 10 rather than Dec 4/5. So, while the specifics still need to be hammered out, the point remains: the community will have an opportunity to meet with the efficiency review consultants in a few weeks. I will post the confirmed details in a new thread when they are nailed down.
