Opening Reception: Main Gallery: “Nature’s Inspirational Treasures,” featuring work by four local women who call themselves “The Artistic Ladies.” They are Savannah Cabral, Polly Taylor, Sylvia Wawner, and Donna Williams. They produce paintings and drawings in a wide range of media, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, charcoals, pastels, and colored pencils. New Exhibit: Upstairs Gallery: “Portraits,” a collection of portraits by local artists. To raise funds for the work of the Art League, the public will have the opportunity to judge the work, & will also be able to participate in raffles for restaurant packages & a new easel.

Opening Reception: Lower Level Meeting Room & Gallery: “Threads from Penelope”Ôø?Quilts & Wall Hangings by local artist Garry Curtis, who grew up in Petersburg, majored in English at VCU, and worked until retirement in retail & restaurants. Curtis named his sewing machine Penelope, after UlyssesÔø? faithful wife, when she worked like a dream after years of disuse. He approaches the design of his quilts in a “neopsychodelic” fashion: traditional blocks using bright Amish-like colors & wild, vibrant prints, using no pastels or earthy repro fabrics.

First Floor Gallery, Landing: New Exhibit: Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Maggie Chalifoux moved to Richmond at an early age. After studying art at VCU and pursuing a career in computer technology for twenty years, she began pursuing art professionally in 1988. In 2006, she moved to Lake Gaston, where she has a lake-front studio. Her art is diverse. In striving to grow, she tries many subjects & many techniques, and she studies the masters, especially, recently, modern masters. Her paintings exhibit a rich palette and a vibrant use of color, and are found in collections throughout the United States.

Continuing Exhibition: “Laying the Foundation of a City: PetersburgÔø?s History to 1815,” an exhibition on PetersburgÔø?s early history, featuring copies of maps, portraits, and other images, as well as a few artifacts, including a display of miniature portraits of personalities associated with Petersburg. A Petersburg 2007 Exhibit. Continuing Exhibition: “PetersburgÔø?s Lowndes Stoneware.” Features examples of Lowndes pottery including a rare treasure, an exquisitely adorned pitcher that was recently added to the exhibit. The Lowndes pottery operated in the Blandford section of town from 1806 until 1855. The pottery primarily produced utilitarian stoneware pieces for storing and serving food. A Petersburg 2007 Exhibit.

Continuing Exhibit: In the windows of the Leonard Building: Work by Midlothian mosaicist Jacki Sowers, who brings a touch of whimsy to the sometimes staid world of mosaics. Using glass tiles, mirror, porcelain flowers, seashells, pebbles, beads, & ceramic figurines, she embellishes mirrors, tables, urns, wall fountains, & mannequin forms, saying, “anything that doesnÔø?t run fast enough faces the risk of being glued, glitzed, & grouted.” Don’t miss!

Continuing Exhibits: New work by Kirsten Kindler, a grant recipient from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2004, who works in oils & extraordinary cut-paper hangings. New watercolors by Petersburg artist Catherine Warnock, who was born in Scotland & lived in California. Her influences are from travel & nature. She is currently studying with Carol Meese.
