PAAL November exhibits
The Petersburg Area Art League announces its upcoming November 2007 exhibits. The main gallery at PAAL will present ìNatureís Inspirational Treasuresî. This is a body of work done by four local women who call themselves Artistic Ladies. They are Savannah Cabral, Polly Taylor, Sylvia Wawner, and Donna Williams. Read more >

Nonprofits encouraged to attend Cameron Foundationís upcoming grant workshops
The Cameron Foundation will be holding information workshops regarding its grantmaking process on November 29, December 6, and December 11, 2007. All workshops are offered at the Foundation’s headquarters at 24 West Old Street in Old Town Petersburg and will be conducted by the Foundation’s Program Officers, Anne Douglas, Risha Stebbins, and Najmah Thomas. Workshops begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. and run for approximately two hours. Organizations are encouraged to have a representative attend one of these sessions to find out more about the Foundation’s priorities and the application process. Read more >

Mixed martial arts competition at Fort Lee Nov 10

Pamplin Historical Park now offers map of Petersburg area Battlefields
Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier now offers visitors a detailed map of the Petersburg Campaign. Commissioned by Trailhead Graphics, the map is a guide to historic and modern features that commemorate the Petersburg area Civil War battlefields. The map details such locations as Five Forks Battlefield, Reams Station Battlefield, the Eastern and Western Fronts, Pamplin Historical Park, and Grant’s Headquarters at City Point. It also indicates Virginia Civil War Trail Sites, locations of earthworks, monuments, markers, and visitor centers around the Petersburg area as well as other Civil War points of interest. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2am Sunday, Nov 4. Clocks on cellphones and such will fall back from 1:59am to 1am at that time. Be sure to roll your other clocks back one hour on Sunday.

Petersburg Arts District Forum, Nov 13
Petersburg City Councilman Brian Moore and Colonel (ret) Victoria Revilla, President of the Southside Virginia Council of the Arts, cordially invite you to a Petersburg Arts District Forum, on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 6:30 to 8:00 PM, at the Union Train Station in downtown Petersburg. The intent of the session is to finalize the boundaries of the Arts District, to provide the definition of arts entities within the District and to review the language of the document to be submitted for the City Ordnance promulgating the Arts District.

Christmas tree lighting in Old Towne
A Christmas tree will be lit in front of the Visitor’s Center on Friday, Nov 30. The stores will be open late awaiting St. Nicholas (who will receive children at Union Train Station after the lighting), and there will be carraige rides, carolers, church choirs, and refreshments!

Dredging project: $$$
Today’s P-I notes that US Rep Randy Forbes (R-VA) “placed a $1.5 million allocation for dredging in the House-passed 2008 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill. That bill hasnít been looked at by the Senate yet. After the two chambers agree on a final version, Bush will review it.” The article also notes that the tests aimed to see if the river’s pollutants can be broken down should be completed in a few months.

on the $12m Mayton Transfer Lofts project
Mayton Transfer Lofts is the warehouse conversion project being developed by Dave McCormack and Axis Development at 4th and Bank in Petersburg, situated a few blocks from I-95 and a few blocks from the Appomattox River. Today’s RTD presents an interview with Dave, and notes among other things that phase 1 of the project (5 condos and 47 apartments) should be completed and ready for occupancy in February, when phase 2 (64 apartments) will begin.

Petersburg-based Virginia Ravens play for national title
The Ravens, a semi-pro team in the Mason-Dixon Football League, will be competing for the national title Saturday Nov 10 at 7pm at Cameron Field (from I-95 S, take exit #50, turn right at the stop sign; Cameron Field is at the bottom of the hill).

Kitten with rabies prompts Animal Control to set traps starting today
The P-I reports that a kitten adopted from a stray litter tested positive for rabies. As a result, Animal Control is setting traps to round up stray cats and dogs, starting in the Beauregard Avenue “area”, and perhaps extending elsewhere in the city. It is recommended that you not let your pet loose outside, to keep your pet from coming into contact with sick animals, and to ensure that animal control doesn’t trap your pet.

the latest on South Side Station
Today’s P-I notes that the City of Petersburg acquired South Side Station in October, and that Petersburg National Battlefield is considering whether to buy the Station from the city to serve as a visitor-contact center — toward that end, look for a public meeting early next year that will help the park staff determine if there is interest in this use of the Station.

Carol Anna Meese debuts new Atelier and 18 landscapes
Petersburg artist Carol Meese has moved her Atelier (workshop) to the first floor of the Friend House Gallery. She will debut her new space with a new body of work inspired by Virginia landscapes during an opening reception Nov 9, 7-9pm, during Friday for the Arts.

Alison Chase Radclife brings music and art to Sycamore Rouge
Alison Chase Radcliffe sings spirituals from the African American tradition and accompanies herself on piano, playing all of her own arrangements. She sings from a deeply spiritual place with power, beauty and subtlety. Her repertoire of traditional spirituals includes I Want Jesus to Walk With Me, Pilgrim Traveler, Amazing Grace, and Bright Morning Stars. Alison’s art seems to draw from the same deeply spiritual place as her music. She paints and draws portraits of women from her imagination, using primarily oils on wood. She also uses pencil, watercolor, gouache, and ink. Read more >

Deadline to apply for heating assistance is *this Friday*
Get the word out to your neighbors without computers: The deadline for low-income Virginians to apply for Fuel Assistance is this Friday, Nov. 9. Those who think they may qualify, especially the elderly and disabled, are encouraged to apply at their local department of social services by close of business on Friday. All households that meet the eligibility requirements and apply by the deadline will receive a heating assistance benefit. Read more >

Public workshop: “Establishing Black Institutions and Leadership–1776 to the Early 20th Century”
The above-named workshop on Petersburg’s rich African-American history will be held this Saturday, November 10, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at First Baptist Church [map] in Petersburg. The featured speaker will be Professor Melvin Ely of the College of William & Mary, the Bancroft Award-winning author of Israel on the Appomattox and Adventures of Amos ‘n Andy.
