Read about the forum here. (P-I)

    From the article:

ìWe see Petersburg growing, we see the Avenue being stagnant,î [Akin] Smith said. ìThe time has come for us to revitalize ourselves from the inside out.î

One of the multiple speakers, Amina Luqman Dawson, presented a photo book project, which she undertook in order to help preserve and tell the history of the Triangle through its African-American roots. She said the purpose of the book was ìto celebrate ourselves and to really crystallize what you see as your history.î

The photo book, which is under contract with a publishing company, will be divided into 10 chapters ranging from education and churches to the early years of Petersburg and civil rights in the city. Dawson asked for help from the residents who may have old family photos that could tell the cityís history.

Thank you to everyone who came out in support of our efforts last night. The Triangle Center for Development has now shared it’s vision with all segments of the commuity. We look forward to government and general public support to establish an arts and cultural district that will revive life on the triangle and restore “The Avenue” in such a way that it will attract tourism, support small business development and educate our youth thereby giving them hope and building self-esteem.

The support of PPN has been greatly appreciated and establishes a foundation of unity between the old and the new, the past and the present and goes a long way toward bringing us together to work for the good of the whole city.
