Utopia Spa and Art from the Heart sponsor PHS art contest
Utopia Spa and Art from the Heart will co-sponsor the 2nd Annual Art Contest for the Petersburg High School Students during the weekend of Nostalgiafest, October 5,6,&7. This year the theme is “Portrayals of Petersburg” — the students will be photographing a person that they feel represents Petersburg. Read more >

Conserve water
Today’s P-I reports that Lake Chesdin, the region’s main water source, is at critically low levels once again. The article highlights several ways to conserve: turn off decorative fountains, reduce watering of cars/lawns, do not fill pools; note that restaurants will likely serve water only if requested, so be nice to your waiters/waitresses if they don’t automatically serve water at your table. :-)

We’ve determined that with the site update, the calendar is broken in the sense that we cannot add/edit/delete calendar items to the calendar. We are on the case, and should have this resolved in the near future.

City workers continue their collective bargaining efforts?
On several occasions (e.g., here, here, and here) the P-I has written on the efforts of city workers to collectively bargain for increased wages. In the most recent of these articles, $10/hour is labeled ’slave wages’ and an employee requested that union dues be deducted from her paycheck. In earlier articles, it was stated that the current wages can cause crime. Read more >

On Petersburg School Board’s proposal to end public comment periods
Today’s P-I writes “Last night, Lewis was the board member who made a motion to remove a proposed policy change - which would have made the change to the meeting format permanent - from the agenda. Lewis’ motion to remove the proposed change was approved unanimously.”

Essay contest, focusing on “The Avenue”
The Triangle Center for Development will award a cash prize to the winner of the essay contest, “The Avenue, What I Remember!” All submissions should be between 250-500 words, postmarked no later than Oct. 12, 2007, and mailed to TCD Essay Contest, P.O. Box 4223 Petersburg, VA 23804. The winning entry will be announced on Oct. 30th at a public forum held in the theatre of the Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 2223 S. Crater Road, at 7 pm. Read more >
