Opening Reception: First-Floor Gallery: “Layered Papers/ Painted Layers,” featuring the mixed-media art of award-winning Richmond artist Emma Lou Martin. She will exhibit a retrospective of collages created over the last ten years. She has a love for gardens & an interest in history, current events, & the arts, and all will be seen here. Martin works with watercolors & collage techniques, & incorporates stamps & found materials. Her work can be found in numerous corporate & private collections nationally. Through October 7.

Opening Reception: two fine painters: Rod Givens will be exhibiting recent oil paintings. He has been in the design field for many years. After leaving advertising, Rod joined Ignatius Creegan in making hats. They have won awards in the top fine arts & crafts shows in the nation. Givens is an emerging painter with incredible skill in using color & expressive brushwork. His paintings have been described as “mysterious . . . Compelling . . . as if some loving process has layered diverse dimensions of experience.” Susan Singer will offer viewers a smorgasbord of fruits & vegetables rendered in pastels. She has been working with form & color. She has been working with form & color to create beautifully sculpted, energetic, bold, & delicious offerings based on produce from the weekly Farmer’s Market at the William Byrd Community House. Each week she purchases beauties there & then explores their form & color in her home studio. Through September 29.

Valerie brings a fresh natural talent to the team.

New Exhibit: Jewelry by Ellen Marie Murphy, whose love of jewelry led her to begin studying the craft while living in Wisconsin. She creates her own lampwork beads from glass rods, adding multiple colors or fine silver to the beads in their molten state.

Continuing Exhibition: New and old work by local artist Page Roller, whose passion for painting began three years ago. She hasn’t slowed down yet.
Poetry Reading: Ryan Tillar, author of Scribbles and the many questions of cause and ripple effect, performs his one-man dramatic interpretation. A native of the Petersburg area, Tillar received his BFA in acting from East Carolina University. 6:30-7:30 pm.
Wine Tasting begins at 5:00 pm, with Scott Young from Republic National Distributing, who will focus this month on rose / blush wines.

First Floor Gallery, Landing: New Exhibit: paintings by James Bassfield, co-founder of the Crossroads Art Center in Richmond. His work has been exhibited in many venues in the Richmond area, & his work is hanging in private collections throughout the U.S.

Siege Museum

Continuing Exhibition: “Laying the Foundation of a City: Petersburg’s History to 1815,” an exhibition on Petersburg’s early history, featuring copies of maps, portraits, and other images, as well as a few artifacts, including a display of miniature portraits of personalities associated with Petersburg.
Continuing Exhibition: “Petersburg’s Lowndes Stoneware.” One of the earliest industries in Petersburg, the Lowndes pottery operated in the Blandford section of Petersburg from 1806 until 1855. The pottery primarily produced utilitarian stoneware pieces for storing & serving food. Rare examples of stoneware mainly from private collections will be on exhibit.

Continuing Exhibits: New work by Kirsten Kindler, who holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute but now lives in Richmond. A grant recipient from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2004, she works in oils & extraordinary cut-paper hangings. She will be showing a filigree influenced by a recent trip to Morocco. New oils by former Petersburger Stephen Roebuck, a graduate of U.Va. & Pratt Institute, who teaches at Christ Church School. New watercolors by Petersburg artist Catherine Warnock, who was born in Scotland & lived in California. Her influences are from travel & nature. She is currently studying with Carol Meese. New oils by Petersburg native O. Pollard, who has been painting since 1954. Don’t miss!

Purple Passion
