Petersburg Symphony Orchestra - the 30th Anniversary Season

Season concerts:

Sunday Oct 28, 2007, 4pm, Petersburg High School
“A Special Relationship”
The Orchestra salutes the Jamestown 2007 observance and the enduring relationship between England and the United States with characteristic music from both sides of the Atlantic. English selections include Purcell’s Abdelazer Suite (from 1695), Gilbert and Sullivan’s Overture to HMS Pinafore, and Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite. From America come selections from Kern’s Showboat and Barber’s Essay No. 1.

Sunday Dec 9, 2007, 4pm, Petersburg High School
“A Child’s Christmas”
Bring the whole family to enjoy music evoking a child’s view of the holidays. Mozart’s Toy Symphony and Herbert’s March of the Toys will complement selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and a mini-festival of Leroy Anderson’s popular tunes - Sleigh Ride, Syncopated Clock, and others.

Sunday Feb 24, 2008, 4pm, Petersburg High School
“Gatlin’s Greats”
To honor its origins, the Orchestra performs music favored by our founder, Dr. F. Nathaniel Gatlin, including Bethoven’s Leonore Orchestra No. 3, Sibelius’ Finlandia, two dances from Copland’s ballet Rodeo, and Leigh’s Impossible Dream. Gatlin’s chosen successor, Music Director Ulysses Kirksey, performs Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in A Minor.

Sunday Apr 27, 2008, 4pm, Petersburg High School
“Celebration”
Hooray for our thirty years! Join us for surprising music with surprising guest artists.
