on S. Sycamore St., along the curve south of Sycamore and Claremont. My neighbors tell me this happened early (7:30?) am Sunday.

Drunk or crazy. In Petersburg, same difference.

I saw the flatened street and stop signs at the southwest corner of Tuckahoe and Sycamore streets. It could possibly have been a heart attack. It happens.
I agree rezoom. I’m no investigator, but there doesn’t seem to be evidence that the driver tried to stop/slow after hitting the stopsign, which made me wonder if the driver was suffering from a medical condition. Hopefully P-I will have the details at some point.

Whoever hit this corner, hit it. The damage is straight line of site along the Sycamore Street alignment, which haws left and down at that intersection. And, it doesn’t look like wheels touched grass from the curbs to the wall. From the number of tailgaters and rude gestures I get along that stretch, folks apparently think the speed limit is considerably higher that the posted 25. Perhaps its time for another old fashioned remedy, rumble strips.

I have been an accident investigator and I had the same thoughts about the fact that there appear to be no skid marks or braking marks nor steering marks in the grass.
I’ll be interested to see the toxicology report on this one.
Drunk wrecks tended to happen between between about 12am and 4am so the time is out of wack also.
That said, I have worked drunk wrecks with evidence just like this one but they are rare.

I have local source who tells me it was a heart attack, but they have no name or confirmation. BTW does the P-I report any Saturday evening / Sunday morning Petersburg activity? Nothing in the afternoon paper Tuesday on this one. They will however report tomorrow on the passing tonight by city council (5 to 1)of a Special Use Permit to operate a nightclub at 3270 S. Crater Rd. That translates to a 2:00 am closing and 2:45 am off the premises request. Glad I’ll be off the road. But is my front yard safe?

Gail… I live close to the accident area, and I think “speed bumps’ or “rumble strips” of some sort would be a great addition to our neighborhood! Does anyone know if neighborhood groups or individuals can implement them? Or does the city have to? I’m sure they’d be on the WAY BOTTOM of the city’s to-do list!
A few tickets to speeders may get the job done more quickly/cheaply…

Speed bumps or “Sleeping Policemen” as they are called in the UK are very noisy especially when people don’t slow down for them out of ignorance or defiance. Might be trading one problem for another. Bottom line, any option but good old fashioned law enforcement is is second best at best. If we’re starting a pool here, put me down for intoxicated (at least that’s what I hope it is!—drunks can sober up–heart attacks are forever).
