How about this answer to the barricade: more police, more tickets, more light

From Sunday’s RTD: “Richmond police are increasing their patrols in Shockoe Bottom based on complaints about large, disorderly crowds…. Officers will be ticketing and towing vehicles that are parked illegally, as well as ticketing people for playing loud music from cars, carrying open containers of alcohol and littering. Richmond police will also use lighted trailers to brighten the area tonight….’Shockoe Bottom is a great area for hanging out and having fun, and we want to keep it that way,’….” Thanks to the new blog All Things Shockoe for the find.

As Rudy prove in NY, take care of the small stuff and the big stuff will take care of itself.

Cracking down on “minor offenses” will for the most part always give the impression that anything larger will be dealt with swiftly and that is a deterrent.

Perhaps P’burg could take a page from Richmond’s Book. Instead of barricading Sycamore Street, which gives the late night scene on Sycamore between Washington and Tabb St a “block party” feel and sends legitimate traffic through some of the darkest desolation in town. Let’s park that hi- dollar incident RV acoss the street, light up the night, jack up the video cameras with a live feed to headquarters…
