VSU, Richard Bland among 28 shelters for hurricane evacuees

Today’s RTD covers how the greater Richmond area will help in the event of a category 3 or higher hurricane causing evacuations from Norfolk, Hampton Roads, etc. The shelters are designed to accommodate 50,000 people, and there are plans for evacuating upto 12,000 persons without transportation. Note that these 28 shelters, “all at state colleges, universities and institutions,” are for evacuees; local residents would go to shelters operated by their local governments.

Two helpful websites re: hurricane (and other emergency) preparedness:

    1) Ready Virginia. In addition to general preparedness information, this site provides info on what to do if you or yours have ’special needs’ - e.g., pets, elderly, persons with disabilities, infants/toddlers.

    2) VA Dept. of Emergency Management’s VAEmergency.com.

(I’ll have links to both of these sites in this site’s Directory, under ‘Government and City Services’ shortly.)
