Visual Arts Venues

Petersburg Area Art League

Opening Reception: First-Floor Gallery: �Third Annual Juried Show,� featuring art by members of Petersburg Area Art League and others. Three prizes will be offered.
At the front entrance: Caricaturist Sagan Lacy, a rising sophomore at Savannah College of Art & Design, where he is majoring in animation. At the July Friday for the Arts!, Sagan drew a large crowd.

Opening Reception: Lower Level Meeting Room & Gallery: �Forest Visions,� featuring the work of Sheila Holland, the award-winning artist-in-residence at the Petersburg Area Art League, who teaches oil and acrylic painting there. A 1988 graduate of VCU in painting and printmaking, Holland lives in the Enon area of Chesterfield County. She has been painting landscapes for at least two decades now, and is especially intrigued by thick forests, swamps, vines, tangled limbs, and shades of leaves.

Continuing Exhibit: Exhibits and tours of the South Side Depot by Petersburg National Battlefield Rangers. The Depot, perhaps the only remaining Civil-War-period railroad depot in the entire Confederacy, presents a dramatic story.

Continuing Exhibit: Gallery: �Profit Not Prophet,� Chicago turned Richmond artist Kevin Orlosky is lighting fires beneath his collective viewers yet again in his latest acerbic commentary on the state of our nation. Delving into such hot-button issues as the Iraq war, America�s escalating consumerism, the steady erosion of civil liberties, and fear mongering, Orlosky�s observations are skillfully couched in allegory, opening a dialogue where the viewer may determine his or her own depth of reading. . In turn poetic, shocking, and controversial, Orlosky�s unfettered creations explore the dark side of American politics, drawing intriguing parallels through his unconventional iconography and challenging each viewer with their relevance and potency.

New Exhibit: Tavern: Landscapes in pastel by Nathan K. Pope, of Aylett. Pope, who was raised in Georgia & graduated from he University of Georgia at Chapel Hill in English, seeks �to create the close harmonies I discover in open fields, marshes, rivers, and skies; to reveal the dialog between the tree line and the sky, a lone cedar, and passing clouds, a man-made structure in its natural setting� in his paintings of marshes, farmland, & other open spaces.

Continuing Exhibit: Jewelry by Ellen Marie Murphy, who whose love of jewelry led her to begin studying the craft while living in Wisconsin. She is well known for her vivid paintings of the sea.

Opening Exhibition: �Laying the Foundation of a City: Petersburg�s History to 1815,� an exhibition on Petersburg�s early history, featuring copies of maps, portraits, and other images, as well as a few artifacts, including a display of miniature portraits of personalities associated with Petersburg.
Continuing Exhibition: �Petersburg�s Lowndes Stoneware.� One of the earliest industries in Petersburg, the Lowndes pottery operated in the Blandford section of Petersburg from 1806 until 1855. The pottery primarily produced utilitarian stoneware pieces for storing & serving food. Rare examples of stoneware mainly from private collections will be on exhibit.

Continuing Exhibits: New work by Kirsten Kindler, who holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute but now lives in Richmond. A grant recipient from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2004, she works in oils & extraordinary cut-paper hangings. She will be showing a filigree influenced by a recent trip to Morocco. New oils by former Petersburger Stephen Roebuck, a graduate of U.Va. & Pratt Institute, who teaches at Christ Church School. New watercolors by Petersburg artist Catherine Warnock, who was born in Scotland & lived in California. Her influences are from travel & nature. She is currently studying with Carol Meese. New oils by Petersburg native O. Pollard, who has been painting since 1954. Don�t miss!
