Petersburg National Battlefield hosts the Battle of the Crater Commemorative Weekend
On Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29, the famous Civil War Battle of the Crater will be remembered at Petersburg National Battlefield. Ranger talks and living history programs will occur at tour stop #8 and the Eastern Front Visitor Center throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to hear the amazing story of those involved in one of the Civil War’s most vicious battles, and the story of civilian life during the siege of Petersburg.
Ranger talks will describe how soldiers from Pennsylvania dug a 511 foot tunnel and placed four tons of black powder under almost 300 Confederate soldiers from South Carolina and Virginia. Other talks will reveal the role the United States Colored Troops played during the battle. Living historians will perform Confederate infantry and artillery drills.
While military presentations occur at tour stop #8, civilian life will be the focus at the Eastern Front Visitor Center. The program “Petticoats and Tin Soldiers” will address the Petersburg civilian population and how life deteriorated as the war progressed. Women’s contributions will be examined as reenactors reveal the various roles the women of Petersburg performed.
July 30, 2007 marks the 143rd anniversary of the Battle of the Crater, also known as the
“horrid pit”. Come see why this battle has inspired historical documentaries on the History Channel and is featured in the book and film “Cold Mountain”. For more information, please call (804) 732-3531 ext. 200.
