Fort Lee expansion: statistics
Today’s RTD gives the numbers that yesterday’s article did not.Ôø? Allow me to highlight the $1.2 billion per year increase in economic activity that is expected. Here we go:
Fort Lee today:
3,900: soldiers and other military personnel based here
3,100: civilian employees
1,300: contractors
27,000: student soldiers a year train at Fort Lee
$527 million: annual payroll
$212 million: operating expenses
$251 million: estimated salary and wages of people off the base whose jobs depend on Fort Lee
After the expansion, Fort Lee will have:
3,100 more military and civilians
27,000 more students
$2 billion of new construction
$1.2 billion a year of new economic activity

Thank you for the Fort Lee statistics. Researching specific income levels for permanent military and civilian to arrive in the 2009-2011 time frame. Any info on the time frame and numbers of perssonal very helpful.
Thank You

Hi Ken - check out also the thread Fort Lee Growth Management Plan — there is a link to the consulting firm that likely has more numbers that would be of use to you. The Crater Planning District Commission may also be of some help.
I keep hearing that as part of the expansion of Fort Lee, for security reasons, Rte 36 will be cut off at Petersburg so you cant travel to Hopewell from Petersburg anymore using 36. I first heard this perhaps eighteen months ago, but didnt put much stock in it, but now the rumors are more persistant. Folks who I have spoken to have asked certain elected officials directly about this possibility and there have been no denials that this option is being seriously considered. Are our elected officials in Petersburg so ineffective and clueless that they would allow this to happen to the city? Should our glorious city council allow this to happen, then they could also vote to erect a fence around Petersburg, hire Kurt Russel and film the sequel to “Escape from New York.”
