Now open: Walnut Hill Food Lion!

Actually, it opened Wednesday, but if you didn’t catch the head’s up buried elsewhere on this site — its open, its inviting, and the employees are offering up outstanding service!

Have been to the Food Lion quite a few times since they opened and it is a welcome change from the old store. They are open from 7am-11pm each day.

big deal. they shut down the food lion just down the street so it is not like there are any fewer empty buildings in petersburg or any new businesses opening up town. Futhermore, the site is hallowed ground, the no mans land between fort hell and fort damnation, a sacred civil war battlefield. On April 3d, 1865 you could walk from fort davis to the merchants tire on blue bodies and your feet would never touch the ground.

While there are almost no areas of eastern and southern Petersburg that were untouched by the battle fought here, there is no way to preserve every part of every battlefield. More to the point, any trace of what once was is now gone. I’d never suggest the removal of Ft. Davis for a strip mall but the building on this site takes an empty but fine business location and turns it into progress for the city.

The new Food Lion is nicer and apparently better managed than the old and I’m sure they know that if they keep up what they have started that they will give Ukrops a run for their money. Competition is a good thing always.

Not only that but the additional retail space next to the Food Lion will surely attract new retail. There always seems to be at least a dry cleaners, video rental shop and something along the lines of a Dollar General Store at the same locations as Food Lions. I don’t know if they are all held by the same company but the more the retail space is utilized the better.

well “commonsensedude” your arguement is the same as every developer who wants to build on a historic resource in petersburg to make a quick buck. pavement = progress. the civil war battlefields in petersburg are a unique resource found no where else in the country. How does Petersburg protect this resource? D10 dozer and asphalt. gettysburg had a little 3 day battle and has turned that into a tourist industry that attracts a million tourists a year an economic engine for its region for years to come. and petersburg? build a school on it, a kmart, a strip mall now this is vison. no wonder the city is falling down to the ground. What’s my solution? call me a radical,i’ll wear that title as a badge of honor. Put the 270+ acres of earthworks along defense road back in the national park like it was before 1972 and revoke all the driveways and other easements the city has allowed adjacent property owners to build thru the earhtworks for political purposes - they they violate the deed transferring the property from the feds to the city anyhow - and use that D10 to take down the sprawl between ft.davis and south blvd and put in the earthworks just like they were before they were destroyed in the 1960s in the name of progress. Advertise the city as a civil war tourist destination.

Perhaps the site selection is not something our entire community can rally around, but the reinvented Food Lion brings a touch of class and convenience that is greatly appreciated and much needed. On Petersburg Vibe, one woman notes “The new Food Lion is really nice! I’ve never seen another one like it.” There’s hope for our future in that comment.

Related to the above…† Today’s RTD covers the proposed purchase of land in Henrico by the Civil War Preservation Trust, and highlights that among the National Park Service’s goals leading up to its centennial in 2016 is “protecting Richmond’s Civil War battlefields through land acquisition.”

Surfing the CWPT’s site, I found this list of endangered battlefields for VA. The list ranks each battlefield by 1) how decisive the indicated battle was in determining the outcome of the war, and 2) the extent to which†the locale is threatened by development.

Today’s P-I on the Walnut Hill Food Lion:

Walnut Mall closed in 1991 due to a loss of business from the then-newly opened Southpark Mall in Colonial Heights.

Demolition on the former Walnut Mall began in August 2006 to make way for the new shopping center.

Itís one more piece of proof that Petersburg may be turning the corner.

The New Food Lion Rocks !!!: )

So… the New Food Lion carries wine and beer,†is clean, and offers good looking produce, fresh looking meats, and wonderful customer service… beside the fact that we live in VA, particulary Petersburg,Va., what do the battlefields have to do with me having a decent place to shop!?? I am confused. :) No disrepect intended, as my husband and I both have ancestors that died in the Civil War and in the Crater. Oh and did I mention you could not even see the Food Lion from the road at their old location?
