Dear Concerned Petersburg Resident:
Thank you for attending the April 17 Public Forum on Education at the Tabernacle Baptist Church. There was great turn-out and many wonderful questions to Dr. Cannaday, Dr. Shannon and Mr. Betts! Iím writing to follow-up about the School Budget meeting coming up on Tuesday (May 1). One of the key issues people spoke about at the forum was the importance of attracting and retaining excellent teachers in Petersburg. Mr. Betts, Acting Superintendent, asked people to follow up with the City Council to support the school budget, including $1.9 million to increase teacher salaries. Let’s keep the momentum going! Tell City Council we need more quality teachers!
WHAT: Give public comment to City Council
WHEN: May 1, at 7:30
WHERE: Union Station, Petersburg
WHY: Excellent teachers are the key to childrens’ success. Petersburgís average teacher salaries are lower than all six nearby school districts, and not just a little lower: from $5,500 to over $14,000 lower! Higher salaries will let PPS keep more of its good teachers and help it hire quality new teachers. More information about teacher salaries is below.
Hope to see you on May 1, and thanks again for showing your support for children at the PAC/JustChildren forum!
