We have so many exciting projects under way at this time and under consideration by the City as well. Our City Council meetings (the ones I have been to) are very well attended, sometimes with all seats filled. Are the Council meetings broadcast “live” in any venue, i.e. available on a community cable channel? If not, shouldn’t they be? That way more people can share in our enthusiasm and weigh in on issues of import.
Since I’ve only attended a few Council meetings, I can’t speak as to whether recordings have ever been made†of Council meetings (apart from the tapes the†Clerk of Council makes).
However, most local cable companies are mandated to provide public†service programming/air time.††Not being a cable customer myself, can someone comment on if there is a Petersburg (or Tri-cities)-specific channel that airs†government meetings?
Note that†the agenda calls for a public hearing on a proposed increase in the real property tax assessment. In earlier council meetings (see here) the direction of the proposed rate change was a decrease. Maybe a typo in the agenda?†
Also,†note the†proposal to “utilize the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) Mixed-Use Development Financing Program for Phase II of the High Street Lofts condominium development project.”† This suggests the developers of High Street Lofts wish to use†VHDA financing†in exchange for†providing mixed-income residences in the Lofts?
There are many proposals on the table that are worth learning about and discussing.† Be sure to come to the meeting!†
Teresa — your idea of having the meetings aired on local cable is fantastic, as that would allow area residents unable to attend a specific meeting an opportunity to stay apprised without having to call several people to learn what they missed. I’ll ask Ken Pritchett who the City contact is in this regard (and I’ll make phone calls over the next few days with Comcast and the like to learn about public access programming).
Comcast’s local Government and Community Affairs representative (Monica) indicated that for Council meetings to be broadcast, a) the City would be in charge of having the recordings made (either by city staff or a third party), and b) the City would have to approach Comcast about getting the meetings broadcast — on this last point, Monica explained that Comcast’s recent acquisition of Adelphia means that Comcast just acquired the TriCities footprint, and that from an IT standpoint Comcast is not in a position to broadcast any of the TriCities’ government meetings at this time. But she emphasized that if the City were to approach Comcast with a request, Comcast would then work toward enabling the request.
