Also discussed at Tuesday’s City Council meeting
In addition to the budget-related items covered in†yesterday’s Progress Index and RTD†(both of which†draw attention to a proposed reduction in the property tax rate) –†City Manager B. David Canada†indicated that 1)†the City†is close to identifying a new fire chief, and 2) the City has initiated the interview process in relation to hiring a new police chief.

I wish I had realized the property tax rates prior to moving to Petersburg from Richmond. At least there we had visible services for our tax dollars.
Leaf pick up, street cleaning, road repair, yada. In the year and 4 months I’ve lived in P’Burg I have never seen the streets cleaned; leave pick up, and road repair is laughable - yeah let’s slap a patch of asphalt on a hole and call it a day….
Oh well, Live and Learn.
Yes it’s discouraging isn’t it.
But things do seem to be turning around.
I, for one, am attempting to attend city council meetings and you at least are looking at the minutes if you have been here so that’s a step in the right direction. More of us need to step up and let our council members know that we want things run in a more workman like fashion.
Keep on…!!
speaking of leaves and clean streets. every day a least a half dozen times that golf cart street sucker thing drives by my house. yet the glass, black plastic bags, condom wrappers, cig butts, and other detritus still congregate in front of my curb. he doesn’t even pretend to do his job right. i wonder who’s cousin he is? wouldn’t it be nice if p-burg had a five or ten year infrastructure plan. maybe open a few blocks of street every six months. lay new sewer lines, replace the iron and lead water delivery system, replace the 100 year old gas pipes, and bury all of the fiber, phone, power, and cable lines. revealing the existing trolley tracks and cobblestones underneath, and pouring stamped concrete in other places.
With all the complaints about city services etc., here’s something worth praising.
A city worker is out collecting sticks and branches that have fallen into peoples’ yards due to the storm that just moved through.
He doesn’t have to do that; he could stick to what’s on the public right of way.
It’s nice to see someone taking a little initiative.
I’ll call city hall and pass on the kudos to them also, as city workers seldom get anything other than complaints.
