Friday for the Arts! for this Friday

The March edition of Friday for the Arts! will be Friday March 9 from 6-10pm in Old Town Petersburg. Featuring the wonderful art created from organic materials by Rebekah Harris at Sycamore Rouge, the exotic theremin player Armen Ra at the Rouge, paintings from nature by Frederick Nichols at the Library, Darryl Reese & Catherine Warnock at Friend House, Quatro na Bossa & Jennifer Risley at Wabi-Sabi, & Concerts by Candlelight at St. Paul’s, street music everywhere, and much more!

March winds have blown in a rich assortment of sights & sounds that are certain to delight every predilection & taste. Twenty-four venues will bring us art from other lands, & art that has been shown around the globe. The eight music venues include an old favorite, Quatro na Bossa at Wabi-Sabi, & spirited song from students at Sycamore Rouge & a fine & experienced at soprano, Michelle Harmon-Gulick, at St. Paul’s.

The free Arts Bus† will shuttle visitors between parking lots and all sites.

However, the theremin, as played without touching the instrument by the Armenian-American Armen Ra at Sycamore Rouge, has to be one of the most fascinating performances in Petersburg in memory. Armen Ra has performed at the Vienna Konzerthaus Mozartsaal, at Lincoln Center, & at the United Nations. Don’t miss!

Sycamore Rouge has another hit in store for us with this month’s artist, Virginian Rebekah Harris, an artist & jeweler who will be showing her “Hortus Siccus” series, created entirely from natural materials. Another don’t miss exhibit, along with paintings from nature by Frederick Nichols, at McKenney Library; work from the model by Darryl Reese & Catherine Warnock at the Friend House Gallery; Keithly Pierce at Purple Passion; “African Americans in the Military” at the Siege Museum; & the March All-Media Show at PRAC. Be sure to check out the beautiful photography of Jennifer Risley in the Tavern at Wabi-Sabi as well.

Check out “Mr. G” the magician at Kimberly Ann’s, & don’t miss the Grand Reopenings of Longsteet’s (with its spectacular new bar) & M&M Icecream Parlor (awakened from a winter’s nap).

After a month punctuated by a performance by the Celtibillies at the Rouge (March 17),† an Army Community Heritage Partnerships visit (March 28-29), a R/UDAT Town Meeting (March 13), the Petersburg R/UDAT Team Visit (March 29-April 2), & a major Battersea announcement (March 30), & two concerts by the legendary jazz pianist from Petersburg, Dick Morgan (April 6-7), again at the Rouge, look forward in April to grand openings for the new office of DPI & the new John Tyler office on Sycamore Street, as well as the Spring 2007 Work Places & Living Spaces Tour, featuring eight downtown homes & businesses, both Friday evening & Saturday afternoon, April 13-14. And maybe even the Grand Opening of Maria’s, the new Italian restaurant on Old Street.

Southside Virginia Council of the Arts† (SVCA)† proudly presents Friday for the Arts!† on the second Friday of every month, in partnership with Downtown Petersburg, Inc., and the City of Petersburg, which contributes generously to the project.

By the way, check out the fine new bar at Wabi-Sabi, which makes the entire Tavern & Music Room areas much more appealing. Next month, look for the Grand opening of the NEW Longstreet’s–they’ll be open this month, with a new kitchen, but watch for the new bar! And coming soon–Maria’s, on Old Street,
